< occasionally ponders what the dialect continua must have been like back when everyone still spoke Irish. Nowadays it's only in a few pockets so we just have a handful of "dialects" that sound frustratingly different from each other, and everyone basically has to pick the nearest one to them to learn in school

Oh yeah < has heard those different dialects too and it's interesting. < doesn't remember the way < was taught in school sounding even nearly like the people who speak fluent Irish. < also heard some different examples online and they pronounce certain words wildly differently. Maybe it would have been similar if we were all speaking Irish, where you go down the road and people start to sound different. Still interesting for such a small country to have that many differences, it's more understandable that people sound very different in huge countries like America.
