<'s cat's mother was a lot more intelligent and circumspect. She could adapt to a developing situation, such as deciding not to go out if the weather looked horrible, and then she would find some other way to occupy herself…

Perhaps trying to go out and then not is the means if occupation. Not smart, but < knows sometimes it's the dumber things that pass time
