Dumbass me used GitHub for storing a music bot’s files, forgetting that anybody would be able to see the bot’s token and such – and the bot role had the Administrator permission (all permissions allowed, channel-specific overrides bypassed).

Why exactly did the bot need admin permissions though? Especially if all it does is playback music.

Because I’ve had a Bots role that I apply to all bots.

I’m not gonna do that anymore though. The role will now have a limited set of permissions.

The rule of thumb for stuff like bots is that you only give it the permissions it will actively use and no more, this incident being the primary reason why, so i'd make sure that it's not just a limited set but doesn't have any that it doesn't need.

As a mod who had several bots going on record day, I feel slightly targeted by this.

Eh it's one of those things that's hard to prioritise when you're devlopping anything like that even though you know that it's important. I can't say I would be much better in practice myself.
