Ok. < has never heard of people renting out computers, let alone using a cloud for that. Um who does that actually? Has < missed something here? What a terrible idea :oops2:

< hates subscriptions. Sorry but < doesn’t feel like signing up for a service that goes poof as soon as you decide to say fuck you and stop paying (Which is why < hasn’t made much headway on any of the retro software < has on <‘s Switch since < isn’t certain how long <‘s sister’s plan on the NSO is going to last.). Especially if < ends up not using it very much.

It's been a thing for a while, < thinks the acronym is IaaS (infrastructure as a service).

< can kind of understand it when it comes to a company using the likes of IaaS or SaaS, but it's very different when it comes to a home user. < would prefer if things just weren't ridiculous and PC parts were affordable. It's pretty typical for something stupid like this to happen though. Of course rich corporations will capitalise and become even richer. < can't wait until that backfires later.

< doesn't like how the word "service" has become dirtier over time.

But < is too socially depressed to care at this point.

Yeah, which < uses NSO because < does play games with friends online, that's the primary use case.

Then of course there's also FFXIV, but technically you do gotta spend money to keep servers alive so < can see that.

< doesn't find the online gaming ones as bad, though still annoying to some extent since Steam doesn't do that. Actually having a computer in the cloud to use from home though instead of your own PC is when they're really taking the piss.

< remembers when nettops were taking off for a brief period, they used them to remote into PCs. Not a particularly responsive experience, from what < recalls, but this was the early 10s in fairness.

< also remembers when online gaming was free on PlayStation 3, it was one of the common clapbacks folks gave in the console wars of that generation...then the PS4 happened and here we are now.

< thinks it's as simple as knowing people were paying for it when Microsoft done it, so knowing people were willing to pay = easy money. Ir's pretty much the same with how scalping works, if someone is that desperate they will buy it. < remembers when the highest end GPU didn't cost quadruple figures.

Somewhat related: < has heard that something Ubisoft pulled a few years ago has resulted in a push for the EU to regulate to stamp out this nonsense with games that stop working when servers are shut down – https://www.irishtimes.com/world/europe ... -supports/

Ah yes, The Stop Killing Games campaign. < hasn't been following it closely but < glances at it every now and then. It was spearheaded by the guy who made the Freeman's Mind YouTube series.

< recalls some people being extremely against the motion for some reason, even though in reality, who the hell wants to pay for a game that can stop working when the company that sold you the game feels like it should. It's as bad as selling a CPU that can just stop working when they shut down their servers. Oh wait yeah, they're already doing that via IaaS instead of letting you buy a PC.

< for some reason can't upload a PNG drawing as an attachment.

That's odd : < has been doing it each time < wanted to share drawings

But while testing, < confirms this is not working anymore. < calls for Hunch's resignation.

Out of curiosity as a fellow dev, what was the sudden issue?

< came back home at 1AM due to the game, not only did we win, but I also played :)

<'s intrigued to see the You Game of all threads being at a lull. Normally it's one of the mainstays even during quieter periods...

<'s sweet tooth really riled up in the last week, < has had too many cookies and doughtnuts. < wonders if it's some form of relapse after < tried to settle down after the christmas period. At any rate, <'s glad that <'s weight is relatively stable despite that...even if <'d rather it keep going down. <'s not gonna complain seeing as it's not shot back up from post-Xmas blues.
