The students at my old school didn't really know what computer hardware is. They just compare their mom's 8+-year-old Dell machine with a MacBook Pro, and somehow believe that all PCs and Macs have the same hardware, so it is a fair comparison.

Meh, I understand how many lack knowledge of tech specs, and aren't really concerned by them. Though all in all, their computer usage is limited enough that a lack of tech spec knowledge wouldn't really negatively affect them in the PC market, as they often don't need power. Though that still means they make some pretty silly statements which show their ignorance in the subject.

Yes, but you shouldn't argue with someone who does, besides jokingly. My friend and I started laughing when we heard that stupid statement.

EDIT: An exact log of a live IM chat I had with a Sony "tech support" agent. Perhaps I could have been a bit friendlier, but I don't really find any excuse for this level of ignorance--well, at least he tried...ish.

The "feature" I am looking to disable is the one that temporarily disables the touchpad as you are typing, that is, the one that is intended to prevent unintended movements of the cursor, but really ends up being a major annoyance. I want to able to use the touchpad for PC games, which is near impossible to do at the moment.

We can disable and enable the touchpad by using FN key +F1.

Lets try this, go to control panel select hardware and settings open mouse and check if there is settings which says hid cursor while typing.

On the Pointer Options tab, under Visibility, select the Hide pointer while typing check box.

I sincerely hope you don't mean the "hide pointer while typing" option. I mean the touchpad will COMPLETELY LOCK.
