I like the Hoodlums set.

I also think that Grolgoth is better than Razorwife, yes.

It's just a personal project though, not a commercial business; why make everything "conducive to an enjoyable game experience" when you're really just in it for the fun of drawing up some sketches and crafting some models?
Besides, I'm pretty sure anyone who actually has the patience and intellect to play a proper game of chess should be able to able to handle simple matters such as which piece does what.
To make things simpler still, you'll notice that in mine I actually grouped the pieces together in logical ways. The big bulky things (Barrel and Gorilla Pirates; Grim Keeper and Spineroo) are Rooks and the knights, able to jump over other pieces are represented by agile characters (Red Henchman [jumps really high] and Ninja [Teleports]; Lavomatrix and Hoodstormer [both fly]). Bishops are neither bulky nor agile but still maintain some authority, and my suggested Ray-quivelants reflect this (Hoodoo and Hoodboom, Spyglass and... Ok maybe not Zombie Pirates but they're just really cool; could be removed for the general I guess). And the pawns? Well there's bucketloads of these little dudes, what else could they be?

Grims, Black Lums or Slapdashes work as Pawns for the Hoodlums set.
