You probably live a lot closer to some people. I don't know if there are any other active Irish members aside from Plum, and when I'm in Sweden, I don't know if there are many of those. Sweden is also a lot bigger.

When I look back at the old posts it seems in the 2000s that 90% of the forum members were English/Scottish! currently, I believe me and Ambi are the only English members and serza is the only Scottish one

That reminded me that I have to visit an online friend I met 13 years ago... It's unbelievable that, even we've talked on a daily basis since then (chat, voice chat and video chat), we still haven't seen each other irl!

Not sure if there are many Spanish people active here. At least most of you are from Europe, which makes travelling easier

I still found it hilarious how LoveMetal ended up realizing I wasn't British and was an American instead. So I can see how it's easy to not know for sure what region someone's from.

This could just be me but when I meet someone online, instead of downright asking I always try to work out what country they are from there’s still a few mysteries on this forum for me…

I recently solved Xenesus’ locational mystery and I’m still trying to work out other guy out there (despite me being pretty sure he’s just from France)

Normally the way to distinguish people from other countries that speak the same language are the words they use, but it's crazy to think that it isn't necessary at all for you English speakers... Ffs, agree on how to write!

I actually never knew Americans spelt realizing with a z

France and the US seem to be the most common countries of residence here

Yeah, the inconsistencies can be confusing, and sadly it's not just spelling differences. We also have to deal with the actual word meanings as well. Such as our chips differ from your chips. Same for biscuits, cookies, and so on.

We still use the word cookies in England, just we refer to stuff like chocolate chip cookies as cookies but custards creams we call biscuits. Brotish people will call both biscuits though

Things like that will end up causing me to need a chart to know what's what.

Yeah, that's what answered it for LoveMetal about me, when I mentioned I was eating peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, basically.

Barging in to give you the ultimate trick to spot a French person!
Look at those phrases:

"I like plums!"
"I like plums !"

"You don't like plums?"
"You don't like plums ?"

Notice the différence ?
(I would add this to the totally useful guides topic, but it's flawed as it only works 92% of the time... 7% is when you meet a Frenchy who actually understands non-baguette punctuation, and 1% is when you meet a spy )

You can also tell people from northern and southern France apart depending on if they punctuate most of their phrases with a "enculay/putaing !" or not.
Also, if they say "pain au chocolat", you know that you are talking to a proper French person!... BUT, if they spout some heretic nonsense like "c h o c o l a t i n e", then you know you're talking to a hopeless degenerate from the south-west!

I always randomly alternate between the "s" and "z" in words that have them due to my text correcting software constantly reminding me of both US and British spelling

To be honest, I've always been curious about why there's a space between the end of the sentence and the punctuation mark. I just never looked into it.

I will point out that the spelling "realize" is most commonly used in America, but it is also recommended by the Oxford dictionary, as being closer to the original Greek -ιζειν than the French-style "-ise" spelling. That's why I also say "realize" despite being from Ireland

I tend to use "-ise" in those cases. I get that it becomes confusing though because of the spelling differences, especially because of auto-correct / spell check.
