This was my exact reaction upon seeing this. I guess it's cool seeing some love for R1 GBC, but at the end of the day it's just R1 GBC, but now 40$, on the same console to boot! The new soundtrack is on a technical level, admittedly pretty good, but I will say it doesn't really feel like Rayman to me. Feels like some generic "super retro 8-bit music!" but I still appreciate it being here at all. The keychain is pretty cool.

It is cool seeing actual new Rayman products being released, especially based off of a more obscure title like R1 GBC, but it's not for me. Happy other people are excited though! :D

Well... Hello again everyone! I took some well-needed time to clear my mind out of the many dark thoughts that overtook me yesterday, and so I wanted to take the time to sincerely apologize for my misbehavior, especially to Steo when he genuinely did nothing wrong! We all do make mistakes, but if anyone actually did any yesterday, it was me and not anyone else.
It was quite nonsensical from me to do this when I was already aware of how difficult it can be to moderate so many discussions especially since the recent years, as we once talked about that...

Returning with a clearer mind (and less sleep deprivation from being painfully sick :oops2: ), I can really tell I wasn't thinking straight at all to react like this and when I'm someone who doesn't have the excuse of not knowing the forum's rules or how edits such as these happen to prevent typical escalation from bringing up politics (thankfully we're not TwiXter or this would already be a warzone :noelnoir: ).

I really should have accepted to stay away from the Internet that day because I was definitely in need of some proper rest, as I was at some of my worst this year both physically and mentally (and I'm not saying any of this to make excuses for my overreactions, I take full accountability for my stupid responses).
Yet, I still compulsively checked the usual anti-social networks and got caught so off-guard from seeing those news that I couldn't hold myself back to come sharing it here, and summarize everything I saw being said about this rerelease so everyone could have the full picture... The thing is, we were three people mentioning the more "sensitive" concerns at nearly the exact same time when we posted, and it's perfectly understandable why anyone moderating the topic would be afraid of a sudden escalation following this, so nipping it in the bud was the safest move.
I should at least have phrased my report in a more neutral-sounding manner especially when I'm someone who hates/avoids politics like the plague... (I can guarantee you'll never see me participate in the political topic, unless we're discussing why plums should totally dominate the world :bad: ), and I should have held back on my trademark anti-Ubi snark... but it's so hard to resist the urge of mocking them sometimes. :hap:

What I should have actually done in response to my removed line was painfully obvious and a much easier solution, there's no excuse for it, even if I didn't intend to be genuinely malicious it was very irresponsible.
I reverted the original post and removed my bad sarcastic edits, so here's the preserved remaining second one under spoilers for the sake of future context and as proof of my misdeed:
I don't know about you guys, but I sure do love seeing some extremely valid concerns when buying a Scummysoft product being completely censored, and spending time writing words here only for them being completely removed without a trace... Guess I won't bother anymore for anything then, that'll save me plenty of time. :hap:
See ya, it was a pleasure talking to y'all here during all those years! :coeur:

I hope everyone who ordered this rerelease will have a great time with it, and if you're disappointed/unwilling to buy it no matter the reason, we can always find relief in the fact that even some of Rayman's most obscure games aren't completely forgotten! :)
Let's hope it'll truly be for the better in the long run...

Now, I'm definitely gonna take a good break from the Internet for a while (aside from posting my usual creations), I think it'll be much wiser until I'm back in a fully stable shape! The importance of both physical and mental health should never be understated... :confus:
Sorry again for making such a scene, and have a great week everyone!

It's all good, we just don't want this topic to get out of hand and turn into a political debate, derailing entirely and going off-topic, which usually happens when politics are brought up. It's still of course fine to talk about any of those things in the political thread, which is dedicated for topics like that.

When removing that paragraph yesterday, I just took that line as part of the same context. So my apologies for this also.

I appreciate the apology, and I wish you the best of luck regarding your well being. Mental health is very important indeed. I've been there before. :oops2:

I have to apologize for lashing out too. I’m gonna go try and confess at church this Sunday, I don’t normally go but I feel it might let me wash off all my regrets.

Just a quick heads up that I split this conversation from the topic in the RayWiki section which is for discussing how to document the game on the wiki. ;)

I also noticed that the Chromatic version apparently has "autosave", how would that work? Did they ditch the password system entirely or is it more like save states on an emulator?

That is a good question about how the saves will work on this, since they'd have to literally modify the game to include a save feature, which I suppose they could have pulled the code from Rayman 2 Forever for ease of development.

I'm also hoping to have a nice user manual for this thing too, as it will be a great addition to RayWiki. :)

Good call in splitting the thread, I was actually wondering why it was in the RayWiki section, until I realised the initial topic was actually intended for this.

Is there any place we can listen to the soundtrack? I'm curious now as to how bad it actually is :hap:

I also haven't heard the music yet, but a few people have mentioned that they don't like it. I mentioned that I'd like to hear it and judge it for myself, as I even compose NES chiptune quite often (Game Boy is similar in some ways). It would be interesting to hear if it's bad or just different. :P

There's three gameplay videos on this page where you can listen to the music but that's all I'm aware of.

I found a bit more footage of it and audio of the soundtrack here:
https://www.instagram.com/p/DO9ALm1j52k/
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/gujEUtL9CX4
I don't know if the YouTube "trailer" is the actual soundtrack but it sounds similar.

ModRetro's instagram also mentions that this has autosave: https://www.instagram.com/p/DPCCQqOCUqk/
Is this really the only improvement they could add?

I'm not a fan and won't be buying this. What I've heard from the soundtrack sounds okay, but it completely changes the mood of the game. It's just not Rayman anymore. The price is ridiculous for something that seems worse than the original. I would be much more interested if a fan would take on a project like Rayman 3 Readvanced for this game and create a properly upgraded PC version. :)

Ubisoft and ModRetro could have at least made it so there was a way to unlock the bonus Ubi Cliff level that required a Ubi Key.

Huh, that's interesting, which you should still be able to unlock the bonus level with this method I believe. Since the Chromatic still offers the IR functionality like that of a Gameboy Color.

You can luckily still unlock Ubi Cliff in this version. The manual describes how to use the infra-red link to do it (even listing some other games it connects to). Imo it's rather lame they didn't automatically unlock it considering they made other modifications to the game. Just like before there will only be a very, very small number of people who will experience this level.

As for the auto-saving, it seems the game will remember the password when it shows on screen after beating a level. So they probably did so that when you boot up the game it already has the last password shown auto-filled in.

And yeah it's a shame about the music. You can listen to it on their website. They also made some promotional videos and articles. According to a one such article the new music was made in collaboration with Ubisoft, but it doesn't seem like much effort was put into making it feel Rayman-like.
Of course, why republish an old game when you can add some polish? Modretro’s version of Rayman features a brand-new soundtrack created in collaboration with Ubisoft, and rumor has it that the soundtrack is quite impressive, according to the project manager of the re-release (who just so happens to be the dev behind Dragonyhm).
My guess is they remade it to avoid having to pay license fees to Eric Chevalier, who's work the music is based on. That was seemingly why the iOS version of Rayman 2 was originally developed with a different soundtrack.

All of this, alongside the really high price and the political connections of the company has made this a rather disappointing release to me. I really love the game, but I will just stick to the original release. I'm not sure if it's an unpopular opinion or not, but I honestly quite like the original music. It is pretty good for a GBC game imo. The game also looks really pretty and has some really good level design. I would highly recommend people check out the game if they haven't already! I hope maybe eventually it'll be added to Nintendo Switch Online like how it was available for the 3DS Virtual Console.

Also worth mentioning since we have a digital version of the manual we can now also extract the images from it. Some examples:
