In a dream we awaken from death because dreams are simply experiences and memories being shown to you in episodic series. It is impossible to dream of an experience that has never happened to you, and because we know what death is but not what it's like, we can dream of dying but not death itself. Our brain does not know what to do and cannot dream any longer, so it forces us to wake up.
My view is that if we where to die in real life, it would be like turning off a computer. There is no energy being supplied to the computer, so anything being stored on RAM would be wiped clean, and there would be no processes to follow.
Our brain is a volatile memory bank that has a huge capacity, and when the energy is removed, our life ends.
My argument towards an afterlife is that it's impossible for our conscience to be beamed up to some otherworldly realm because our concience is simply a network of electrical signals here and there, and when we die the energy just dissipates into our immediate surroundings.
