Well, I did what Lovy suggested and configured my laptop to use Google's public DNS, thus bypassing the blocking on the smartphone. But I get the feeling that leaves me worse off than before…
If I could figure out what the DNS servers of my mobile network are, I could just use those. I don't really need a hosts file on the laptop since I use ABP and NoScript.

Also, the closest alternative to a blue screen on Linux is a kernel panic.

Kernel panic indeed. I remember a discussion on Phoronix one time where someone said that ideally the mechanism for handling a kernel panic would try to use the Direct Rendering Manager to display information on the screen. Well, as long as it's not blue…

Here's a laugh. For some reason there's instability with GNOME on the Nouveau driver lately, which can lock up the whole system. Since I didn't want this happening during RD, I decided to disable GDM and launch Sway, my preferred window manager, directly from a console. But for some unfathomable reason, the statusbar doesn't show up at the bottom of the screen when I do this. Means more screen-space for PC, so not necessarily a bad thing I guess!

Well, I don't know precisely if there is a Linux distribution with such a precise desktop agencement, but it is certainly achievable with Ubuntu!

While Ubuntu is ok in itself, there are some environments based on Ubuntu that I recommend more:
* Linux Mint - Very similar to Ubuntu (actually, it is fundamentally Ubuntu), but it has a different desktop, that I find more ergonomic and easier to customize.
* Elementary OS - Again, it's a fork of Ubuntu. This one aims to be as simple as possible to use and maintain. A good OS for beginners or people who just don't want complications.

Every one of these OS allows to have multiple desktop, naming them, and using them for whatever you want!

Four rectangles? Sounds vaguely like a KDE4 environment, if I remember right (I haven't used KDE in ages). Were you using openSUSE by any chance?

Anyway, my setup held up! Even managed to record the full 24 hours with SwayGrab, though I don't think there's anything very interesting in there. The best moment was probably when I saw Dutch figuring out my bot, but that was on my phone.

Managed to redo a base install of Gentoo again, but this time I used the kernel from the disc instead of compiling it myself. I was too impatient

No idea, I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to Linux, I've only used it a few times.
I do remember there was a kind of app store where you could download free Linux games, I remember a few gems such as "Angry Drunken Dwarves" and "Super Tux", aswell as one rather nightmarish metroidesque platformer...

So, I've started messing with Microsoft's so-called "Windows Subsystem for Linux". I've been able to set up the Nemo file manager as an alternative to Windows Explorer, with the help of Xming, and I've also set up an SSH server. There's something weirdly satisfying about using this plus SSH to drive MS Office using remote commands from a Linux laptop.
