You know when bread gets really bad when you see blue mould on it. Happens very often with us. Yet some time ago, there was a TV programme about a man that ate food that had gone off, and somehow he came out fine; he did it to make us all aware about us wasting so much food [the UK is notorious for this ] as well as the money for it.

I'll let you in on something; I won't ever eat fruit if it is too sour or is too soft. Like oranges. I don't want to waste the lot we have at the moment.

Well, it's like that anywhere with a lot of humidity in the air. Newfoundland, Vermont, Maine, New York, etc. all have problems with food spoiling rather quickly.
