I don't know that much about RISC-V, but I've seen enough conversations on Phoronix Forums that it sorta feels like controlled nuclear fusion – always just a few years away

Haha that's fair, I think there are some RISC-V products out in the wild at this point, I remember Jeff Geerling doing some videos on one of them. I also think Framework have one as well, but I'm not completely sure on that.

Tbh I'd much rather use a RISC-V chip in my computer(s) than an ARM one, but I don't really see either happening any time soon…

Agreed, one step closer to a truly open Personal Computer in such a case. Though I'd be curious to see if anyone could ever create an open-source GPU that could rival the proprietary offerings.

I'm not inclined to think so. Especially not now with all the cloak-and-dagger geopolitical stuff about AI

Indeed, it's a shame too, there's so many more gains we could probably have if we weren't stuck in this whole proprietary mire.

Speaking of AI and being stuck in mires, someone sent me this on WhatsApp the other night:

Actually I watched some of the Venom movie on TV last year, and the villain legit reminded me of one of the marketing guys in the company I worked for

Truth in fiction I suppose, even when you really don't wish it to be.

Was it the Woody Harrelson guy?

My computer is broken. Like the charger is now loose and for some reason it disconnected the internet chip or whatever the fuck. I don't know, I bought this laptop on Kijiji for 75$.

I have to return one laptop charger that I bought. I looked one for a very similar laptop model, but it didn't fit.

Thank god for the EU and their USB-C mandate

Yes, that is already reducing my stress levels!
Actually a few weeks ago I went to buy two USB-A to USB-C cables. I could have sworn I picked up two the same. But when I got home I realized one of them was a Lightning instead of USB-C, making it absolutely useless for me. And I hadn't kept the receipt
Eventually I'll probably give it to someone who needs it…

Well, my Thinkpad 25 Anniversary seems to have finally given up the ghost. I think it's the motherboard. I have a replacement motherboard here, but I cannot muster the energy to start disassembling and reassembling everything.
Plus, having a friend with access to a BGA station, I'm still toying with the idea of unsoldering the 7th gen CPU and soldering an 8th gen CPU, just to see if it would work (same socket).

I know the feeling!
Are the 7th and 8th gen CPUs really electrically compatible?

Supposedly so, because some low-end SKUs of 8th Gen laptops came with 7th Gen CPUs. I doubt they would have designed two different motherboard layouts. A brief look at the Thinkpad T470 and T480 schematics revealed no differences, but I should probably consult with my friend and get a closer look.
