Rayman Pirate-Community

For the moment I just know how to edit sprites textures, thanks to BoostingChad on the Ryemanni discord who helped me.
The process is simple but quite long, because all of the game sprites are grouped together in one layer, and for one character you will have to edit each body part independently, as you can see here: https://i.imgur.com/glSGyCU.png
The process is the following, you just need to open and export the files containing the game textures with UndertaleModTool, then edit any character or other element you want, and import the files back.
For Mr. Stone and Mr. Dark true boss rush versions, I took the textures from Rayman Redemption and overlayed the characters textures in Rayman Redesigner. Note that each sprites part must not be moved in the layer and keep their exact place, else they will appear blurry in game.

Mr. Stone EX mod is not finished yet because for a few movement frames, some of his body parts still have his original skin. I need to find where they are located in the files to fix that. I made my screenshot at a perfect frame that's why you can't see it. Mr. Dark GBC version skin is complete.

When it’s ready I will share a download link here with both.

Modding seems currently very limited and difficult, but some nice things can definitely be achieved. Take your time.


By the way, I don’t know if this is real or an elaborate troll, but Ryemanni has "accidentally" teased half of a title in his latest ReDesigner stream.
You can tell the cut half clearly says "Anniversary Update". It’s also interesting to notice that it uses the same rainbow colours from Rayman Redemption Gameplay Demo’s title.


I wonder if this means new content or just plenty of bug fixes, but Ryemanni did end the stream by saying the game’s anniversary is going to be epic, so I would expect both. If so, then I hope it will be the missing features from Redemption or at least most of them (bosses from True Boss Rush, golden cages, Ting Magnet, Better Power-ups upgrade, Cage/Item Locator, Electoons timed challenge, decorative character sprites like Betilla or the Dark Magician, and more...). That would be very convenient as modding would complicate level sharing and creation.
I shared a bug recently on Game Jolt about a crash I got consistently when adding a Dream Forest layer in some levels and then testing the level without saving, and while Ryemanni asked me the levels’ download and if I found a consistent way to reproduce the glitch, he went completely silent when I provided him what he asked for (which I’ve noticed he tends to do before updating the game). Perhaps this is related, or maybe I did just get ignored (which I’m perfectly fine with since the crash can be solved by saving before testing).
No matter what is changed or added, I’ll release updates for all my creations!... Yes, even if we just get a whoopie cushion recolour.

Whether it has to happen with this update or through modding, new content is really welcome. What the community manages to achieve with levels is really impressive, but having the same contents for so long starts to feel a bit stale, in my opinion.

Nice recolouring, Squiz! I also hope that the Anniversary Update will bring new content, because such games work best with a steady stream of additions, but bug fixing should be the number one priority at the moment.

I don’t know if all the features have been shown, but while most of the things I’ve expected aren’t featured there are a lot that looks very interesting!
-Candy platforms and blockers from Rayman Brain Games.
-The Handhorn platform from Rayman GBC will be added.
-Fireballs, Hoplite and the Stomping Statue from the Greek Mama boss fight will be added as enemies. Will make for interesting level design possibilities, especially with the Hoplite’s shield!
-Space Mama’s Spacepots and Moskito’s Big Spiky Fruits will return as obstacles.
-The decorative NPCs feature I’ve expected is confirmed! Tarayzan, Jack, the Musician, the Clown, Joe, the Painter, Betilla and the Monk have been shown.
-New: the Gendoor Triggering Fairy. Can’t be interacted with and will move on its own to trigger all Gendoors and Killdoors it encounters. Handy for timed sequences!
-Custom tiles (actually, a new object used to display custom graphics). Will be greatly useful to make levels built on backgrounds (since you couldn’t see them before in the editor, so it’ll be way easier to place down collisions and to make full-on levels like this).
So yeah, we’ll still have to rely on modders to make a few missing things, but this is really neat!

This Anniversary Update looks very promising! Saddly the bosses from true boss rush won't be a part of it as Ryemanni confirmed to me on discord, so modding is the only way to get them for the moment.
I also plan to make some Bzzit skins.

The pressure cookers and the larger spiky fruits could be interesting as obstacles.

I can already imagine people using these and especially the Spacepots for "bullet hell" sections... Combine them with the Gendoor Fairy in one room, and there’s the potential to make quite the tricky traps and challenges...

Personally, using the maps provided by Ray1Map, I’ve been experimenting with Rayman GBC... But I don’t know if that’s heading toward a remake of the whole game or just an experiment for fun.
Maybe, if I do go this far, I’ll also remake the other versions (Pocket PC, PalmOS) and also Rayman 2 Forever...

Spellbound Forest 1 is already fully functional (I just have to optimise the placement of a few objects)! How does it look?
I had to modify the graphics as they don’t look very good and too blurry when resized for ReDesigner’s gameplay. Also, while I’ve heavily modified the skin to go with the new look and to give it a few more details and more animations, it wasn’t made by me (it was made by ShinyRaichu94), so I don’t take credit for it.

It looks great actually, how did you change the lives icon too?

It's beautiful! I'm guessing it's not officially possible to turn the Tings into fairy orbs though?

-Fixed various memory issues
-Fixed number 9 being one pixel lower than other numbers in the font
-Fixed an occasional crash when deleting a custom graphic object
-Fixed gifts and tokens sometimes not appearing in test mode
-Made it so custom graphic objects will only show the filename when selected or hovered over

Thanks! I wasn’t too sure it would look convincing as the best thing I managed to do was to apply an oil painting filter on low settings with paint.net. I tried other settings to make the visuals more clean and colourful and I’ve also tried some upscalers I’ve found online, but it messed up way too many things at the same time.
Actually, the lives icon uses parts of the custom skin’s picture, so it’s automatic. However, this can backfire with some skins like Noseless Rayman as it’s hard to remove Rayman’s nose or some parts of his face without having either to remove one of the sprites or having a messed-up icon.
I’ve made a lot of changes to the GBC original skin’s front-facing face as the smile had way too big black lines and Rayman’s cheeks looked too thick, so he basically looked like some sort of psychotic bear that would eat my head if I looked at him for more than a second.

Yeah, custom items are still not possible sadly (though, you can still use dangerous immobile objects like prickly obstacles if you keep them in the picture and add the proper collisions to it). So, unless someone makes a GBC sprite pack, we’ll have to stick with the original objects and entities.


Obviously, another issue is that the gameplay doesn’t blend too well with Rayman GBC (since Redemption and ReDesigner are so fast paced and the camera isn’t the same). So unless the player accepts not to use the running ability, the experience can feel very different.
It still works well at least and there’s always the possibility of shrinking Rayman with a fairy so he controls more closely to the GBC version. Originally, that’s even what I intended to do and I didn’t even resize the levels... but then came the problem of the collisions being way too big for Rayman GBC (as the game is literally twice as small as Rayman 1 and its alike games), and so Rayman looked like he was walking on thin air half of the time.

If I really make it into a full project, I’ll split it into two main versions:
-"Rayman GBC/PPC/PalmOS Redemption", with the "improved" graphics, better music (Rayman 2 music from better sounding games like Rayman 3 GBA, Redemption version of Dark Legacy...) and added changes into the level design like more enemies and secrets. The PalmOS version could also get an option within levels to toggle between coloured graphics or greyscale graphics (since custom graphics can be apparently activated or deactivated with gendoors and killdoors).
-"Rayman GBC/PPC/PalmOS Color/PalmOS Greyscale ReDesigned", which would stay true to the originals as much as possible... Yes, that would mean the PalmOS versions would have no music, because that’s the best atmosphere you can expect in a video game.
That would mean at least seven versions, yes... but that wouldn’t be too much work as nothing is tied to the custom graphics, so I can just replace the visuals between versions and make minor adjustments and it would still function perfectly.
I could also remake the cutscenes and make them available in bonus video files... So many possibilities...

By the way, does anyone know if there’s a sprite sheet somewhere of Rayman’s sprite from the Pocket PC/PalmOS version? I’d love to turn it into ReDesigner skins.
