Sounds like it merits further investigation indeed so!

Linux Mint? Is that a more friendly version?
So when you're installing Linux, you have to choose a distribution. There are many many distributions out there, Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, Gentoo, Slackware, etc. Linux Mint is one of the more user-friendly distros (at the other end of the scale you have Gentoo and Slackware

)
The universe made a connection of energies, and my friend just talked me about Linux Mint. He's truly convinced he doesn't want to use Windows anymore.
I guess the more user-friendly versions of Linux are okay, but only if you don't use more niche/specific programs, right?

I mean, it depends. A lot of niche programs either have Linux versions or have Windows versions that run under Wine. But of course you could be unlucky and have something that doesn't work under Wine

I don't like how Windows sounds condescending.

Meh. There are days where I cannot decide which developer community has more douches - Linux or Windows.
Probably the one that has more people in general.

I don't know anyone in the Windows dev community so I tend to assume Linux, but I suppose that could easily be disproven

You could
sorta put me in both communities...
Having had experience both as a user and a developer for both OSes, I once got to be called a "Linux fanboy" and a "Windows fanboy" on two different forums in the same week.

I remember someone here once telling me that Windows fanboys didn't exist!

Someone actually believed this to be true?

Nono, it was Tobbe. You can probably find the conversation if you search my post history for "Windows fanboys"

Found it. Well, I do kinda understand where he was coming from. When something is considered 'terrible' by default, just saying that it's 'OK' can make you seem like a fanboy, but are you really?
By a different definition though - I am a Windows fanboy for sure, because I won't put any other OS on any personal computer of mine. I'm used to it, know my way around it, and it does what I need.
Of course if I needed to run a dedicated server of some kind, it would be Linux-based in 99% likelihood, but so far I haven't needed to.

It's funny how Windows got that reputation for being "terrible" by default.

In a lot of cases it wasn't really justified (but now there's all that Telemetry stuff that we could all do without)

I think it's a little bit by design. It was targeting the "lay person", and every time something broke, the "techies" had to step in and help. On Linux, if something breaks, chances are you are a techie yourself, and you can handle it, and not even feel like something out of the ordinary happened.

True. I don't really know how to solve technical problems on Windows, at least not with the ease and flow that comes naturally to me on Linux

Nice, now the Internet option has just disappeared on Windows 11. I can only use Internet with my phone
