I don't think Elon a high IQ or is very smart. Almost everything he's done or said in the last 10 years has proven he lacks forethought and has less STEM knowledge than a sophomore, it just took the aftermath of him buying Twitter for most people to realise he's not the brilliant genius he tried to convince everyone he was. His biggest talents are probably acting and scamming shareholders, that's about it, he's a successful snake oil salesman.
I was pretty sure I had read something before claiming he had a fairly high IQ, though that being said, that could have been blown out of proportion. Even then, I guess there are several different forms of intelligence. What you have mentioned about people realising they're not a brilliant genius could also fall under the heading of blowing the IQ thing out of proportion, as in, he was basically portrayed as a brilliant genius (aka, something he's not). Given how stupid of a decision what they did with Twitter was, it definitely shows their true colours.
In terms of scammers, I have watched many videos on tech scammers, the likes of Scammer Payback, and Kitboga, and all I will say is that if people want to call scamming a talent, tricking others into taking their hard earned cash (especially the older ones who don't have a clue), they are the lowest of the low. The idea that people are perfectly happy to take things from other people due to trickery instead of honestly earning their money, just shows that they are really terrible people with no morals who shouldn't even be allowed to call themselves a part of the human species.

Elon Musk’s acquisition (and subsequent “destruction”) of Twitter is exactly why I went to Mastodon.

I find the concept of Mastodon interesting, but I haven't yet felt the need to get on it. After all, I hadn't used that other site for years anyway…

Call me a cynic, but I feel like the issue is less to do with the platform itself, and more its mechanics and how it seems to naturally cultivate negitivity. It's not like Twitter was a bastion of reasoned and well mannered discussion before the acquisition was had anyways...
I know Mastodon and the other clones have this federated framework that seems to better aid in the cultivation of ones own experience, so perhaps there is scope for it to be inherently less toxic, but it's relative early days at this point - would they remain less toxic if they reached a similar size to Twitter?

I agree with the fact Twitter/X has often had toxicity associated with it, often having everything spiral down a path of negativity, focusing on pushing narratives, gatekeeping, and even cancelling others who disagree etc. It's all nonsense and it takes a lot away from the platform compared to what it could have been. I liked the idea of it for self-promotion, trying to get your content seen, but of course, it has its clear downsides due to how people choose to use it. Facebook has often had a similar issue to be fair, but then that's supposed to be more personal and oriented around friends and family more commonly than a public audience.

Reddit gets on my nerves because people prefer to become a hivemind and downvote or upvote people instead of responding to what they say like an actual person. Facebook is terrible because of people's political opinions (especially family's). Instagram is annoying to open because of people trying to be the next big social media influencer (but I love to open it to look at videos of animals). Tiktok is actively destroying our culture and is spyware.
I like Discord though, but unfortunately it's also a giant security risk. I've been using youtube for years and that will take a BIG effort to remove from my life.

Interestingly these are the only 2 social media platforms I tend to use these days!
I suppose it’s not helping that we’re randomly giving our usernames away! (Sorry I’m not releasing mine - I need to protect my identity too you know?)

I'd say it isn't that hard to guess your Discord ID man. It's harder than Fifo's one for sure

Mine isn't that easy... I won't say it here, but as a hint I'll say that both Fifo and you got me added as a friend there

And that's exactly why I don't like Reddit. It goes off topic many times and it seems more like a troll/shitpost competition than a useful social media...
I'd say Instagram isn't that bad, specially if you only use it for watching memes and animals. Everybody needs a daily dose of serotonine with puppies

Is YouTube considered social media? I feel like I wouldn't exactly say so? I mean, can build your channel and sort of use it like one, but I feel like it inherently functions differently than Instagram for example. It doesn't even have messaging features. Back in the day it certainly was, when you had PMs, channel comments, friends and so on...
I guess the only one I use consistently is Discord. I'll comment on something on Reddit maybe once every few months, and I had a brief phase recently messing around on Quora (lol good lord) but nyehh.

I have no informed opinion on the man but he has created enormous shareholder value at most of his companies (you probably wish you'd bought Tesla stock five years ago). He has destroyed value at Twitter, but he took the company private so no shareholders have been hurt, maybe just a few bankers.
And yes, I usually say Twitter, not because I particularly care about the takeover but rather since "X" often sounds too generic and it may be unclear what I'm referring to without proper context-setting.

I couldn't agree more, and I've always found Twitter to be a very negative platform despite some of the interesting accounts out there. It often felt like its primary purpose was for angry, frustrated individuals to openly display their political intolerance and hatred of those who hold different views, and Musk, hate him or love him, has nothing to do with this for once.

Hah! I bought a very small amount of AMD stock when it was at almost its all time low at $1.90. Sold the last bit of it years ago when it reached an all-time high (at the time) of ~$45, I think. Look at it now.

It's condense format deliberately prevents meaningful conversation. All you can post is slogans, catchphrases and clickbait. You can do threads, but it's not intuitive. With that said, even when platforms supposedly allow for long data posts and indepth discussions (like Facebook), most population can't seem to handle it.

He has the guts to go up to a huge crowd of people and claim we'll be driven by AI and flying through vacuum tubes 7 years ago with zero plan whatsoever, fail to deliver, and do so over and over. I think his image is the only reason he boosts value so much. I guess you can read that as social intelligence, but when that charisma is so absent in most other people of his caliber... it doesn't say much
My main point really is that I don't think he should be admired the way he is, because he relies on everyone falling for his absolutely absurd schemes and thinking he's a mad scientist when he's probably the worst engineer in the room, it's just not very honest work. At the same time, he does awaken that childlike wonder in a lot of people, which I think is a good thing, as it allows these companies that are for all intents and purposes forces of good in the world to thrive, so... uh?
You really don't have to look much further than
something like this to know he's not really bursting at the seams with exceptional social skills either, yikes. Elon and Trump both teach us that all you need when you're a billionaire is a big cake hole.

I do think Twitter was well-intentioned at first, they just didn't give enough credence to those concerns. Twitter teaches us that our biggest social fears will come true. A lot.
Also, Twitter threads are the worst. I like how this is just what we've gotten used to because it's all we have

Indeed, the platform was doomed from the beginning because of the very format that made it so popular. After all, what can you expect of a place that was essentially designed for meaningless conversation! As for the threads, they sometimes do contain interesting information (I'm thinking of the ones RayCarrot makes, for example), but they are such a pain in the ass to use I usually don't even bother with them.

Again, I have no informed opinion on the man himself. I was simply replying to your comment about scamming shareholders, pointing out what tremendous value he had created for them.
To think of his image as the only thing that boosted the value of his companies is also wrong. In the case of Tesla, for example, all the underlying fundamentals - revenue, profit, production - have increased by orders of magnitude. While it is likely that his persona may also have influenced the share price, this is completely negligible compared to the impact of the fundamentals themselves.

I'm not entirely sure why I said that, since that's obviously true. He has tendency to make very bold decisions, which alone sets him apart. I just don't believe those decisions to be very calculated, and I think there's more than enough reason to feel that way. Tesla and SpaceX are some of his only successful ventures, and when you look at the scope of how many he's gone on, it's pretty questionable.

A quick search seems to indicate that his first ventures, Zip2 and X.com (which became PayPal) were very successful too. It's also common for many successful founders to have failed many times before, or even after. It could hardly be any different given what role uncontrollable external factors and even sheer luck play in business ventures.
Which failed ventures did you have in mind, by the way? Just curious as I don't know so much about the guy overall.
