Ooh, looks like Rayman 2 is one vote away from tying with Rayman 3

I have to say, I'm very intrigued at this neck and neckness between Rayman 2 and Rayman 3, it's interesting to see that while Rayman 2 tends to dominate when it comes to discussion about the past titles, Rayman 3 seems have an equal or even greater amount of fondness attached to it. Sadly, it seems the 2D titles don't get much love, it's like an inversion of the Sonic fandom, in a way.

Rayman 3 seems like its recently become the more popular choice on the forums. I think for people who didn't grow up with the games Rayman 3 is probably the more accessible of the two.

And here we are, almost halfway through the year, and Rayman 3 still stands as the grand favourite. Though more interesting is how much more the 3D games are preferred over the 2D games, both R1 and UbiArt. It's quite a significant difference, I have to say.

Rayman 2 is still considered the best title on average, which is particularly interesting, given how it's been subject to more harsher critique as we've progressed further into the UbiArt era. I guess the balance between classic and modern is tipped much further towards classic.

I'm more into Rayman 2 than Rayman 3. The atomosphere and the overall look of the game is more to my taste. Though I do love R3's scoring system. It's one of my favorite things to do in the game, continuing to improve my score.

I do find it odd that the community's favour shifted from R2 to R3 recently. As an individual, mine also happened to. Did this happen to anyone else or is it just a demographic shift like Keane said?

It looks like Rayman 2 has finally tied with Rayman 3. Meanwhile, the 2D games aren't really big favourites, I guess the desire for a new 3D Rayman makes sense.

I've always felt like R2 was more atmospheric and had a more solid believable world, so it left quite an epic impression on any first time players.
R3 is more centred around gameplay and fun, and while it's also brimming with atmosphere it also has a lot of discontinuity and focuses on what would be most enjoyable and replayable rather than the most epic and memorable experience.
I think it's similar to games like Shadow of the Colossus. Even though it's somewhat lacking in variation and gameplay, the atmosphere is through the roof and the experience of playing the game is incredible, and even though you might have a much higher play time on an MMO or MOBA and may have gotten more enjoyment out of it overall, the more epic perfected experience will always be remembered more fondly even if it doesn't have the same level of replayability.

Still got Rayman 3 and 2 neck and neck. It'd be pretty funny if it turned out that it was some balancing act.

I'm leaning a lot more towards Rayman 3 now than Rayman 2. I just love the combat between the many different Hoodlums much more than the pretty boring battles between the almost identical strategies of the Robo-Pirates. And of course, the scoring system is what keeps me coming back and replaying. I've also grown accustomed to the attempted humor of R3. I actually had a chuckle a few times when I fully replayed the game not too long ago.

I totally agree with you 502, Rayman 2 has not aged greatly despite my past constant attempts to fanboy the hell out of it. The combat is really bad, the games constant use of similar color choices through out levels, and the lack of enemy variety. Although I still find a good amount of enjoyment out of it, I feel like I've had a hard time enjoying it as much as I've used to. And despite Rayman 3 not having much of Ancel's involvement, it's level variety feels far more diverse and it's combat feels far more fluid.

Yeah, and it also feels like parts of Rayman 2, especially the original versions, and despite the great atmosphere, had some emptiness and lack of excitement. Revolution did help fill the void with additions like voice acting, more interactions with different characters, free roaming and extra battles, but it wasn't enough in my opinion. I honestly don't play the PC version much anymore. I don't have as much fun with it as I do with Revolution.

The music though I favor Rayman 2 over Rayman 3. R3 for sure has its moments but Rayman 2 has the more memorable music.

Music is probably the main reason why I prefer Rayman 2 over Rayman 3. Here's why.

This track and many, many other tracks that sound more or less the same and when combined, take up 75% of the entire game.

Rayman 3 uses combat themes way more often than Rayman 2 does, and they aren't even very good IMO. R3's exploration themes are good to great, but they're constantly interrupted by... ugh:

In some worlds the devs just decide to throw Hoodlum after Hoodlum at you, making that music last longer. Because of that I find it a slog to play through many parts of Clearleaf Forest, the Bog of Murk, Hoodlum Headquarters and the Tower of the Leptys. That's almost half the game. I always liked the other worlds more, but my recent playthrough made me realize how much I hate that every fight completely breaks the atmosphere of the level, and I think that happens most in the worlds I named. The Land of the Livid Dead also suffers from it quite a bit, but that world's exploration music (when it plays, at least) and nice environments make up for it.

I also prefer R2/Revolution for most other artistic aspects like world design, character design (R3's power-up forms look awful) and script (wasn't really a fan of R3's humor, I prefer a simple plot like R2's to it), but R3 has the best Rayman combat. It's certainly much better than R2's. I like the curved punches, and I like having to fight each type of Hoodlum differently. As for overall gameplay, I feel like R3's gameplay is well thought-out, but R2 had more puzzle-like challenges and a larger variety of minigames that were integrated into the main game, as part of Rayman's adventure. So I think I still prefer R2 for gameplay as well.
Anyway, music is the main thing I like about games, and it not being good enough or not being used well enough for my tastes has kind of made me not like R3 as much as I used to. I think I might even prefer RL over it now.
