I think it's supposed to make it easier to see the difference between three quotes when there's a stack of three quotes involved in posting. I'm not sure the system was ever meant to support more than three quotes, which is why in quote pyramids things look a little wonky with the one off quote.

It appears that the quote nests were only setup to go as far as three, in each background color. Though it may be easy to go up to at least five. Just will have to give it a try in a test environment.
