It's not the artstyle itself, rather the expressions left on all the characters' faces.

That being said, less-wacky styles tend to inherently lend themselves to a more serious tone.

Yeah, something definitely felt off during the Magician's betrayal when Rayman was still grinning, hunched over like an animal. Different idle animations for different situations would at least be cool. Even R1 did that with its boss fights.

I loved the tone of the E3 2010 trailer for Origins: It established itself as wacky and silly, but it wasn't going overboard with it and felt like it was gonna show us the glade in some new ways while possibly also bringing in elements from Rayman 1, where Ray's world isn't ever legitimately dark, it's just a magical place that isn't necessarily happy and inviting all the time, and can be pretty mysterious. The idea of Ray and Globox getting to know each other and going on a quest to safe the Glade seemed like an awesome way to keep things lighthearted while also teaching us a little more about Ray's history.

Origins might sometimes also feel a bit like it's missing something for a few us is because I think RotD is pretty much how some of us imagined Rayman 4 would be. My second time playing Origins I knew what I was gonna get and treated the game as it was supposed to be, and then I finally started to really appreciate it.

I think I underestimated just how 'crazy' RO and RL are. To add on to what Adsolution is saying, yea, I think the problem I had with the newer Rayman games was that it's wackiness makes it a little difficult to give any type of serious tone if the games were to try I mean. I sometimes don't mind it, but in the case of Rayman I think Origins and Legends was... a little too wacky for me at times.

Rayman 3 I think had the PERFECT type of comedic relief needed for Rayman's universe, it really semi dark, but still very funny humor. It looked like the unreleased version of Raving Rabbids was to continue that tradition, but they just went all out with Origins/Legends.

I mean like I said, RO/RL are completely fine if you treat them the way the developers did, but yeah, I totally agree. Imo, there's nothing wrong with things getting lighthearted, but that doesn't mean there's no room for a change of tone here and there. Wind Waker is more lighthearted than all the Zelda before it but can be emotional or serious while still holding onto its very childlike nature, or DKC2 still having those very serene bramble levels despite being much more upbeat than the original. Or hell, Picture City in Rayman 1, self explanatory in this case.

I'm not at all saying the games aren't good as they are, but I feel like how Origins was originally presented could have implied what I just described: Olympus Maximus could have been a good place to slow things down and let the player live the moment a little more like those bramble levels, or Moody Clouds could have painted the area as this dark, intimidating factory. In the trilogy, we really get to see all sides of the Glade, whereas now we're just seeing the same thing in different environments.

I'm happy with the recent UbiArt games. They have the great style, the art is excellent, the music is fantastic and really enjoyable, and the gameplay is stellar. I have no problems with it and like Keane said, I played it like the devs developed it; as a lighthearted, wacky nonsensical adventure. There's no need to have constant cutscenes on what's going on. The opening cutscene already told me and all I have to do is play the game.

Personally? I'd prefer the game to have me stop in my tracks few times to throw a wrench into the mix. But that's just me.

Whatever. We're getting a bit into the Rayman territory for a thread in an Off-Topic thread.

I wanna talk about my experiences with Splatoon at WonderCon!

This game is definitely Day One for me! Each time I played, I kept wanting to play more! Turf War was so much fun! The gameplay is fast and frantic and I love it! The map was really well designed and it makes the gameplay really strategic. The only time my team lost was because the enemy got behind us and were painting our base. The motion controls that were used felt really nice once you get used to them and I think I prefer to play with them.

The game looks amazing! The art style is so vibrant and the game plays really smoothly! Seriously, seeing gamplay footage on YouTube did not do this game any justice. You have to see with your own eyes to experience how well this game plays.

Nintendo must really be pushing this game since this was their only playable Wii U game set up this year. And they were even giving out free Splatoon shirts and pins! And your's truly was lucky to get a shirt and all four colored pins!

In the end, I really recommend this game! I've gotten over the no voice chat, I'll just use Skype. This game is definitely going to be my Game of the Year. I love these new characters and just by playing the demo, I really hope Splatoon gets a character into Smash. Anyways, this be the end of my Splatoon Preview. Buh bye!

Over Metal Gear Solid 5? Heh, don't think so.
But yeah I'm pretty hyped for Splatoon, definitely not to the extent you are, but I've got the game on pre order so I'm all set.

I can give less than a shit about Metal Gear Solid 5, so already that game is pretty unimportant to me.

I don't care whether you like it, I'm simply saying I highly doubt Splatoon will top it :p I just read it as "my game of the year", originally I just read it as GOTY, sorry.
But Splatoon is still a great looking game.

Hmm, Splatoon is definitely one of Ninty's most intriguing new concepts, I just hope its newness doesn't cause it to be obscure to the masses.

It shouldn't be. The line to the play the demo was always long, no doubt that the public is loving this new IP.

A huge line means nothing to actual sales, let's just see how it sells. And HOPEFULLY, it sells well.

Hopefully. Hopeful. Hope.

Also, I'm definitely pre ordering the game along with the Splatoon amiibo.

Splatoon is definitely an interesting game but I am not thinking in getting it to be honest.

For anyone looking for a decently cheap copy of Kirby and The Rainbow Curse (NTSC, obviously), I'm selling mine. Message if you'd like further details.

I've been considering taking my pre order off Splatoon for other things but I'm not entirely sure, game looks fun but I have no clue if it screams full price for me.
