Here is my hypotheses on the N64 version secret tunnel:

The box is there in the N64 version, presumably waiting to be activated by a button combination. I do not think there needs to be the cheat signs for a couple reasons. First, the the scene at the end of the tunnel serves as an "easter egg" in itself. Second, the cheats that work in the Dreamcast version do not appear to work in the N64 version. I think they added the cheats and signs specifically for the Dreamcast version to spice up the passage.

Now, the mystery that must be solved: How can one get the box to appear in the N64 one?

Perhaps one needs to use the C buttons?

I think this proves the theory that the devs forgot to put in the activation mechanism. They probably realised their mistake so added this cheat and text in the DC version to take advantage of it.

I think it is more likely that we just haven't found the right code yet.

Is there anyone with a text dump of the N64 version? I would love to look at it.

That was one of the first codes I tried. Unfortunately, it actually isn't so cool. All it does is get rid of the flashing "Pause" text at the top of the screen. Lots of games actually have that feature, as it is useful for taking screenshots for reviews.

Rayman 1 had the same feature.

What ROM do you have? Mine is ‘Rayman 2 - The Great Escape (E) (M5) [!]’.

I'd really like to see this on the PS2 version of Rayman 2.

PS: Is it me or StaceyW posts in this thread have been getting Super-crazy-Rayman-Fan-ish? I'm not saying all of them,but some of them seem to be made by MLII or another very random person.

Not interesting.

No, it shows cryptic text "informing" the player of how to do things in-game that trigger these cheats. Quite interesting.
