If you have iCloud off, then you're fine.

Or was a scam in the first place – I've seen that happen before, on Windows.

I've had a virus like that lock up my computer before when I was using a Windows machine. The bloody bugger took us hours to get rid of, the reason being that it was in fact hidden in such a stupid place, nobody would've expected it to be there. It had installed itself as a file named '1.exe' in my Start folder - you know, the little bar that pops up when you click the Windows icon on the lower left-hand corner. Hilarious in the end, after some hard work trying to find and destroy it, as all that was needed to cure the virus was delete the file.

Wow! I wonder how many people paid technicians loads of money to get rid of something simple like that (or reinstalled their OS, or bought a new machine…)

Yahaha I can imagine that being a serious problem for people not in the know. I'm glad I know quite a bit about computers and also have plenty of friends who do too.

I think I'm one of the few people here who isn't particularly techno-savvy. I do try to teach myself technical solutions though - I would never pay another man to fix/debug my desktop or laptop computers.

Sometimes it's not even worth paying out

Worst case scenario... format, reinstall windows and drivers, and get back on track.
Unless we are dealing with hardware failures, then diagnostics is another game.

I still have no idea what blew up my previous computer, but things are kind of back on track since I was able to inherit a dusty old laptop.

Last week my laptop went kaput. But it failed in such a spectacular and awesome way; the screen dazzled my eyes with so many different colours. It started at the bottom, and gradually made its way to the top until I could see absolutely nothing on my screen apart from this wonderful array of colours.

Hm, did you try plugging it into an external monitor? Might have just been the screen that decided to play up.

It was over seven years old, was tired and sweating, and in desperate need of restoration. But I didn't get round to doing that, unfortunately, so I now have to live with just a tablet.

Aha, pretty much like my laptop in that respect. Still, having a tablet to fall back on is far better than having a rather weak smartphone.

It's kinda sad how you can't not have a tablet or smartphone to fall back on once your computer dies. I had a short moment of not having access to these technologies and suddenly I realised how absolutely helpless you are for staying in contact with people, arranging things and looking up information.
People forget that there are more technologies than our electronic 'friends', and so it becomes increasingly harder to communicate to them outside the use of said friends.

When I had no phone for a bit, I actually didn't have a hard time with it, I somehow always managed to entertain myself. I did notice that I'd get rather bored at checkout lines though.
Also, it's funny to hear about everyone's shitty laptops. It makes me feel luxurious, despite the fact that obtaining good stuff really doesn't require that much effort if some is put in toward doing so in the first place.

"Shitty" or not, any product, especially a computer, can have chances of failure though.
My older gaming laptop, my Intel 320 SSD I bought for it failed due to the infamous 8MB bug. Though I could just get a new drive and fix it easily.

Can't say i'm so much into "good laptops" so long as it runs what I need I have no real complaints.
