What about Debian ?

I don't think Debian is really for "mainstream" users the way other distros like Ubuntu are…

Speaking of which, I'm on Linux Mint 16 at the moment, and I'm wondering if I should switch to the Debian Edition (rather than upgrading to 17). I already have it on a live USB stick, so I'm really considering installing it. Anyone here have any recommendations?

Hmm, I know Debian is the distribution used on Raspberry Pis, and I hear it's often used for server applications.

Technically it's Raspbian, which is slightly customised to make it more efficient on that hardware and have more tools out-of-the-box for those trying to learn programming.

Sorry to interrupt anything here, though I'm very happy, I won second place in the Nimbus Mix Contest (which I'd mentioned in the +/- thread a month or two ago; it's a big deal among audio schools North America), and I won a $10,000 scholarship! The gist of the contest was to mix the separate multitracks to one of three songs provided in a way that shows off your skill and creativity as best you can, and it's open for Canadian high school students aged 13 to 19. The finalists had their mixes judged by a few huge-name world-class producers, including Garth Richardson (who's produced many albums by Rage Against the Machine, Rise Against, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nickleback, Taylor Swift and more), and Bob Ezrin (who produced three of Pink Floyd's albums including The Wall, Alice Cooper's and Kiss' entire discography, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, U2, Green Day and more); I can't believe those guys judged my mix, they're industry pioneers! Infamy-wise among music production, they're like Sam Houser and Gabe Newell respectively.

Here are the winners; I'm second (Cody), and I mixed The Tragically Hip's "New Orleans is Sinking": http://nimbusrecording.com/congratulati ... t-winners/ - I made all the parts except for the vocal line, and turned it into a funk-disco-psychedelic-epic production with multiple sections. My personal favourite part is the middle section, which I got the most creative with.

This is the original song, for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAZUsCONjIQ

So today, the winners got to go on a tour of the school, and I had pizza with and got my picture taken with Garth Richardson! I mentioned that Ezrin's Pink Floyd productions were an inspiration for the echoey guitar portion at the end of the first section.

Hopefully I'll be starting there in early 2015, so excited. :mryellow:

I wonder how many people knew about this:

When using aluminum foil/cling wrap, look at the sides of its box. You’ll see a tab at each side of the box.
Push it in – this will secure the roll in the box.

Whoa Addy, that's pretty fucking impressive! Honestly, I'd love to see you achieve bigger goals regarding music.

And unless it's not too personal, does that mean you'll be moving away from the icky situation at home?

Whoa. Listened to the original, and while I like both mixes, I have to say I prefer yours overall and think you did a fantastic job. I like the alternate style you used, and think the execution was far better than that of the original mix. Can see why you got second place. Good luck on building up your music career. :D

Humch is still busy trying to fix things, editing has been disabled for all of us until he's 100% sure things are in proper order. Just be patient and wait, complaining isn't going to speed things up.

Unfortunately not, the school is only about a 20-minute drive from my place. However, once I'm going there, I'm looking to perhaps move in with one of my friends, but that'll require me to get a decent job that operates outside of school hours, so that's only a maybe.
