At least you don't have to hand in an essay in New Norwegian, a written language that's almost exactly the same as regular Norwegian, but still sufficiently different to make you write every other word wrongly. Why all Norwegian students have to learn this is a mystery to <.

Not only is the language fucked up, but < has to interpret a poem in it.

New Norwegian?

< wonders what the purpose of that is. Is it gradually replacing the "current" Norwegian or sth?

We have two official forms of written Norwegian, Bokmål (book language) and Nynorsk (new Norwegian). They were both created in the 1800's, when we found out that we didn't want to have Danish as our official written language anymore. Bokmål is based on Danish, and Nynorsk is based on different Norwegian dialects. Today only 12-15% of the Norwegian population use Nynorsk as their primary written language, and the percentage is decreasing, which is why it's complete bullshit that every Norwegian student has to learn it.

We didn't make up our own language, we already had our own language, but no official written form of it.
