Watched Mr. Peabody and Sherman the Sunday that just passed. It was a pretty good movie in my eyes. Very enjoyable and I had some good laughs out of it.

The time travelling dog, right? I saw an advert for it which was referencing Doctor Who:

NOSTALGIA FEELS EPIC!!!!!

I literally just saw 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time today. I've got to say, it wasn't what I was expecting; I've purposely avoided reading about it because I wanted to at some point watch it. I mean, I know nothing aside from the infamous scene where Dave disconnects HAL.

From what I've heard about it, I couldn't possibly understand why its reviews were very mixed during its premier, but now I see why: the narrative is incredibly simple, one that normally would only have enough in it to maybe fill up an hour-long film, whereas this one was nearly three hours long. The slow pacing was attributed to the way the movie would use entire 15-20 minute scenes just to establish a setting, atmosphere or emotion, which, while alien to most modern audiences (even for 1968), I actually found incredibly familiar and nostalgic, as I'm used to going to symphonies and operas, things which are regularly formatted like this. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I think that any critic who claims this that this movie is pretentious, citing its vague meaning as a fault in the narrative is fucking retarded, and furthermore, expecting something way too particular from cinema (in my opinion, the most versatile artform of all).

The typical (as in, the way in which it's presented) narrative may be simple and incoherent on its own, but that's the way it's supposed to be. It uses imagery and soundscape infused with a typical narrative to bring you on an emotional journey, elicting something slightly different in everyone.

Personally, my favourite act was Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite. The incredible visuals… Kubrick had so much fun with the simplest of gradient filters, but they were used in such a way in combination with the soundtrack so that a serene mountain valley turns into a massive, endless crushing lava flow, and a canyon turns into a glacier pouring waterfalls in all directions. One scene in particular, the scene between the "walls of colour" and "strange filtered landscapes" that looks like a melting star transfixed me, it's one of the most beautiful and meaningful things I have ever seen.

Can anyone advise on Odyssey Two? I've heard from some that it's a brilliant follow-up to 2001, but I've heard others say that it's a travesty, yet still a good movie on its own. What's the deal here?

That movie happens to be one of the favourites of my father. He even bought the Blu-Ray version when it came out.

2010 is a decent film and has some good moments. It also has to gall to try and link itself to one of the best films ever made, but falls short in every way. Do not expect beauty. Do not expect ambiguity. Do not expect to remember much of it afterwards. It's too insubstantial to alter your perception of 2001, even when it tries to do exactly that.

Hm, I don't know if it's even worth a viewing then, but I probably will watch it anyway. From what I know, Arthur C. Clarke's novel version and sequels were very detailed and literal, contrasting with Kubrick's film, so I presume that the lack of the things mentioned above in the film version of 2010 is due to Hyam interpreting Clarke's novels a lot more directly.

That's just what I've gathered, I can't seem to find a ton of official info relating to that in particular. I'm not up for reading the books either, except for maybe the first one out of curiosity.

Miyazaki's The Wind Rises...

It's one of those films that literally shuts your mouth up. I'm really confused about that one. It wasn't something that I expected. Gonna rewatch on blu-ray.

I saw three movies since the last time I posted something to this topic.

Brave - What a fantastic movie. The Witch is my favourite character in it. I also enjoyed how the plot evolved in the course of the movie and the end was pretty touching. One of the best of PIXAR movies that I've seen in a while.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Damn, the movie was significatively better than the Order of Phoenix. Also, holy crap for the big spoiler in the end.

All About Steve - I had some giggles because of Sandra's role, but honestly, it isn't a movie I would watch a second time. It is really those movies to rent for an afternoon or to watch on TV once (which was my case).

Out of curiosity, have you read Harry Potter books Haruka?

Few of them only, but that was many years ago.

Considering I read all books when they were popular, I don't like any movie adaptations after third one.

I don't see what's not to like about the movies. Goblet of Fire was probably the worst movie adaption, it felt really rushed, despite the book being more than twice as long as Prisoner of Azkaban - the games were still entertaining though. Order of the Phoenix I found to be a rather boring book and movie, and in this case, it again being a relatively short movie I think helped that, compared to the book being the longest book in the series. But, both book and film of the Half-Blood Prince were phenomenal, and I actually liked the movie adaption of The Deathly Hallows much better than the book - the book wasn't well-paced in my opinion, almost nothing happened in the first 300-400 pages, and then suddenly, in the last 200, more than 75% of the plot and action take place. The movie balanced that out much better, and splitting it into two parts I think was a brilliant idea, unlike with that hilarious disaster known as Breaking Dawn.

I'm not even joking, Breaking Dawn, mainly the first part, is one of the most entertaining bad movies I've seen in a while. Charlie cared so little it looked as if he was almost laughing in every scene he was in. Breaking Dawn Part 1 is the best parody of Twilight I've ever seen.

I've never seen the Twilight movies but every short clip or scene that's come across me was always hilariously bad. I don't really get how love triangles are such a big hit, in The Hunger Games it just felt incredibly unnecessary, and seeing as Mockingjay, a book that really, really doesn't need to be divided into two movies (And they are doing that) I'm kind of scared that they'll focus hugely on it just to please the teenage audience. The Hunger Games movies have been pretty good though, so maybe they'll pull it off.

Saw Rio 2. It was okay, could have been a lot worse, but overall it is a pretty cliched animation movie which felt a bit forced at times (The emotional scenes were so out of nowhere that I wasn't sure whether I was even supposed to take them seriously.) and I don't recall getting more than a slight chuckle out of it. But if you just wanna go see a happy movie, you might wanna check it out.

It was pretty spectacular. I absolutely love the look and charm of the movie. They defiantly have to make more stop motion animation movies and/or movies that are plain out terrifying for kids.

Also, I absolutely hate that movies are split into two parts. It is so pointless.

I rewatched Pokémon 2000: The Power of One, yesterday. I forgot how good it was, probably at the same level of Mewtwo Strikes Back or a little better. That Lugia Song is beautiful!
