Well fair use is a very grey area.
The industry the videos are made of make money through the form of publicity. While it's not hard cash, it gets them attention, more players (which means more hard cash than taking down a popular icon on YT), more investors, more advertisers... the more people show off how cool and enjoyable their game is, the more likely they are to attract new customers.rolesfamily wrote:I don't really think it's fair that these gaming channels make money from other people's content. Surely they're in the frame to be sued for thousands
And how is that Google's fault exactly...? The Content ID system was put into place so the copyright holders would get their fair share, and so Google wouldn't be outright breaking the law. The only thing Google is potentially at fault for (though, again, something similar would have been put into place regardless, so it's exactly logical to blame it on Google purchasing the site) is making that system abysmal, but for something as big as YouTube, it's understandable. The system most likely wouldn't have been put into place on a site like Twitch anyway, since it doesn't really allow for the distribution of those sorts of things in the same way that YouTube does.OldClassicGamer wrote:Copyright Claims that people get by Google's Content ID are complete trash and fake most of the times so thats why everyone wanted Google not to purchase Twitch.
However, unlike in the case of the distribution of a movie or song where you are simply distributing the copyrighted content, those gaming channels aren't distributing the actual medium, rather they're distributing someone else simply using it. It's the same reason unboxers don't get charged of selling stolen items; you aren't profiting off the actual item.rolesfamily wrote:I don't really think it's fair that these gaming channels make money from other people's content. The Content ID system is biggest unnecessary piece of trash ever invented. It's broken and is damagining video makers. Why not just leave it to company to flag videos themselves if they feel it is not fair use? Why have robot decide what is fair use and what not?technology4617 wrote:And how is that Google's fault exactly...? This. And though the current system fucking sucks, something along the lines of it is necessary to avoid lawsuits, hence why it doesn't make sense to say that it's "all Google's fault."Shrooblord wrote:The robot is far more efficient and sniffing out copyright infringers than any person or team of people would be if they were to watch every single video that comes out on YouTube every day (that's a crazy thing to ask for anyway). But what the bot shouldn't be doing is handing out the punishments itself. It should notify authorities, they should contact the company whose copyright has been infringed and they should be the ones that look at your video and judge whether or not they want to act on it.
It may be a somewhat grey area, but I think it's perfectly safe to engage in regardless, since the content creators don't seem to care at all; the most you have to worry about right now is your video not getting monetized.rolesfamily wrote:Tech: I guess that kinda makes sense in respect to one not actually distributing the PRODUCT. Hm, I still feel though that it's a grey area. Definitely arguable, and all the while it's that; it's probably unwise to engage in it.
I guess in the end we think differently which is understandable so it's best that we don't talk about this anymore.rolesfamily wrote:I think it's fair to not monetize your video if it's off the back of content that isn't yours.
Good luck I guess.rolesfamily wrote:In other news, I'm asking a girl to meet up with me that I like! Wish me luck RPC! This could be a beautiful romance!!!!
