So the dev team itself is on "whats her name again" terms with Barbara, yet chose her over that stupid blue toad character.

Nope, all of the bios besides Rayman's are directly lifted from Legends, which means Barbara is still called a barbarian.

She might still be called a barbarian in-game, but the official site calls her Rayman's viking companion. It's also in the press release that Ubisoft sent out to most gaming news sites.

Got to love the continuity errors of this team since Origins.
