No, black is an absense of colour.

I call it a colour anyway.

No one have the rights to decide what's a colour and what isn't.

lol

In the first post it says "WELL, THAT'S YOUR OPINION. NOT THE WORLD'S" In large orange text. Then, when you click on this page, the first post on it says "Yes it is."

Just wanted to point that out. :mryellow:

Depends on what sort of view you have on it. According to physicists, black is the absence of colour. Or more, black is something which absorbs all colour, not reflecting any colours, in which case, it´s quite the opposite of lack of colour... x_x;; That´s just like saying a green object is everything but green though, which would just be weird and thinking about it gives me a headache.

From an artist´s point of view, though, black is the darkest value of all colours, while white is the brightest, in which case (and depending on the artist you talk to, some wouldn´t) they might refer to it as a colour, or at least as a value...

How did you come to that conclusion? You were making perfect sense right up until that final statement. :|

Black paint is not an absence though. Black can be no colour whatsoever, but it can also be made into a colour. Those are facts.

As far as I can remember black ink used in pens are made up of all sorts of colours.

French Wikipedia wrote:Colour is the visual perception which the eye has from one or several frequencies of light waves, with one or several given amplitudes.
Which clearly proves that black isn't a colour.

However, if you adopt a different point of view, such as the RGB or CMYK colour models, you may call it a colour, but keep in mind that you're not referring to the true definition then.

By the way, it's interesting to notice that, according to the definition, white is a colour, despite what I was told numerous times.

Yeah, because between the different colours, all colours get absorbed, and none are reflected. True black is rare though, it's usually just very, very dark, but not quite black.

True, you see that if you have pure potassium permanganate, it will seem as if it's black, but in fact it's very very very dark purple. (which you notice as you pour water with it, has to be quite a lot though before you actually see it becoming purple!)

Still though, I haven't heard a clear explanation on what black really is. It absorbs the energy of light and turns it into different types of energy such as heat, but otherwise I wouldn't know how black really functions.

Oh yeah, and another nice thing to crack your brains with, is the mixture of white (all colours) and black (no colour) which forms grey. Interesting subject...

Black the perception of an absence of colours. Thus, black objects do not reflect or emit light, they absorb it all, as you said.

It's quite logical actually, if you add the notion of intensity (amplitude) to your calculations. What I'm about to write is not mathematically rigorous, but I hope you get my point:
Grey = (Black + White)/2 = (1 * (all colours) + 1 * (no colour))/2 = 1 * (all colours + no colour)/2 = (1/2) * (all colours)
I'm using a special operator, referred here as (amplitude) * (linear combination of wave lengths), which shares some properties of the scalar multiplication in a vector space by the way.

Now it's becoming a pr0oO topic though (omg)

        :waaahhh: :waaahhh: :waaahhh: :waaahhh: :waaahhh: :waaahhh:

So Hunch what you're saying is that the difference between black and white is that both black and white are the same collection of wavelengths, but in the case of black, the amplitude is very very small, and for white, it is maximal?

But the amplitude of a wave can never be 0, so there's nothing that's truly BLACK in that sense of the word. But a black hole must come closest to that to our knowledge, then...

Well, black belongs to every “collection” of wavelengths then. If the amplitude is zero, it means there is no wave. Hence the definition of black as the perception of an absence of colours.

Technically, black is the complete and utter absence of colour, and white is the presence of pure colour.

So, if White = 100, then Black = 0, and there is nothing that = -100

I just call them colours.

Color's are made of light... when there is no light... everything is dark (obvsly)
That's why black isnt a color and white is
