You're just lucky diamonds is easier to find than lava because for me it isn't!

Lava spawns randomly. It is fairly common but chances are it could be 5 blocks below surface, just above bedrock or even on the surface. Ravines often have lava flowing down them so that might help.

Meh, all that work to get to the Nether, and I end up in a small cave. If I start digging, i'll end up is a sea f lava.

EDIT:
A friend of mine came over to my house and spend a few hours behind my laptop. After seven hours of talking, eating, and frustration we managed to get the 1.7 Update to work, which also allows me to play the game in short distance instead of tiny. He also gave me some tools for unlimited blocks and such & showed me how to add mods to the game. That's what I call a good friend. He says there might be a possibility to connect to servers as well!
