Whilst it's true that the final boss is quite large, after getting used to the shooting controls after my first playthrough on PS2, I've been beating him time and again to the point where it's second-nature.
The trick is figuring out the patterns, the first stage particularly, since if you can't make the right movements to evade the bolts of lightning, you're done for.
The second stage, you need to time your jumps so that you are in mid-air when he slams the ground, and not to stay too long on the highest platforms or he will lash out.
The third stage, it requires skill and speed to reach the Power-up at the top.
The fourth, require mastery over the shooting mechanics of the Flying Machines.
