In my old animation class, I did a demo of Rayman and got a bad grade since Rayman didn't have limbs and they said I was being lazy so I had to scrap it and I was pretty upset since I actually did work really hard on it.

That's pretty funny. Blame Michel Ancel for your grade.

It's really weird because I actually think Rayman is one of the most well animated characters in gaming. Even though he doesn't have limbs, his movement is always really 'realistic'. like how his neckerchief tails (or hoodstrings) react with realistic physics, how his hair is bouncy, or how his overall animation and face expression is just really fun to watch. The only game where I found Rayman's animation to be 'meh' was the first game, except in Rayman Forever on PC where some loading screens show Rayman doing weird things like starting up and riding an invisible car.

The running animation for Rayman 2 has to be my favorite running animation for any game ever, and the his expressions in Rayman 3, while lacking, were really well done.

And then there's the movement animations in Origins / Legends, which also looks great.

Yeah, Origins/Legends' animations are a mixture of frame-by-frame and tweening. Looks really fluid.

That I can't argue with. The instant I saw and recognised the processes, I thought 'heh that looks really cool. Smart technique'.
Also how for example Rayman's fist stretches slightly as it hovers in front of him when he punches (it 'lags' in mid-air for half a second or so, right?) - little things like that refine the animation.

Man, that sucks :o! Fortunately my Digital Drawing teacher knows Rayman because he used to play in his youth (and still plays videogames in general). I did a 3D animation at a point in which I used a character I've created a few years ago that is inspired in him since he doesn't own any arms or legs and I had a very good mark in it.

On the topic of drawing, it seems Ubisoft is doing the same art contest they did last year: http://uplaylounge.ubi.com/fan-art-cont ... roduction/
Perhaps it would be cool to submit something Rayman-related so the judges don't drown in all the Assassin's Creed submissions.
Prizes are:
For place 1 - 6: An all-expenses paid trip to E3!
For place 7 - 12: A year’s worth of Ubisoft PC Games
For place 13 - 20: One Ubisoft game
Seems a lot better than last year!

I think they were plugging this for about a week and I'm trying to think of what to draw for it. Prize wise at least no-one will end up with just UPlay credit because wow who buys games on Uplay?

The prizes are really much better than last year! (I see my drawing in a fragment in the main page!)

Haha, I still did not use the voucher that I won in the contest :P. If it was a STEAM/eShop/PSN voucher it would be a very different story.

I do not think I can participate this year, since I have the evaluations period in the second half of June and I really cannot get out of here :oops2: . I plan to do a special Rayman drawing but I will only start it in Summer holidays.

The Uplay DRM is pretty awful but they do have some great games on the platform, is it possible to gift through Uplay like on STEAM?

I do think that UbiSoft have other publisher's titles on UPlay as well, I recall seeing Skyrim on it, for instance.

Resident Evil Revelations is on it as well, Ubisoft recently mentioned it being on sale, but of course no matter how cheap they make it, nobody wants the Uplay DRM attached to it. Makes me wish Rayman Legends had a steam only option since that's where I purchased it from. It's annoying to have one layer of DRM under another.

Well, from an academic standpoint, doing Rayman on a walking cycle test counts as cheating. The fact that you're not drawing limbs helps you because you can mix up the shoes easily without trying to prevent the legs from crossing each other. In fact, that saves you a lot of frames... which isn't good at all if you want to learn. Also, limbless characters just make you be careless about the proportions. Rayman could have a leg longer than the other and no one would notice.
