Hilary is a materialization of mainstream society. She says what will get her highest ratings, she has no moral agenda. But, it seems mainstream society has more common sense than Dolan Trumpet and friends.

I think people overreact to this. The dog wasn't hurt, and I don't think she would have let it get hurt. It's unfairly invasive to the dog, but she didn't mean harm. I find the method to be poor, but the woman doesn't deserve ostracization. People react so much more strongly at the idea of something than the actual substance.
It's not as bad as corporal punishment in my opinion, which is something that is only apparently acceptable on children. You cannot duct-tape their mouth, or a dog's, and you cannot hit a dog. But you can hit a child for some reason.
EDIT:
Maybe people didn't know, she only taped its mouth for one minute, she said in a later post.

The six degrees of separation (actually, more like four or five now) can be surprising!

What ? I am sorry but I really don't understand your statement.

I mean a lot of people think corporal punishment, hitting a child is okay, but the same people think doing that to animals is wrong. I think they are both very wrong.

That being said, while I don't like corporal punishment, I do think some people could do with being a little more stricter with their kids. Kids can be a royal pain if they're not disciplined, and it sometimes seems like people draw a blind eye to their mischief.

I think giving a little smack to the little brat is justifiable. My mom would give a good smack across the face to me and my siblings when we're being little shits. And if I had a kid and they were acting up of course I'll give them a little smack.

And why can you do this to kids, but not animals? The animal will feel hurt and confused by it. A kid will too, but parents have a power issue, and some people grow up thinking it worked on them when at their moment, all they did was try to get around it. They learned nothing other than not to stand up for themselves.

Yeah, but still there are a lot of people thinking elsewise, especially where I'm from. I have issue with it working as punishment at all.
But anyway, that wasn't the point of my post.

Oh, I'd give my dogs a smack too if they crapped on the carpet for example.

I think that depends on where you draw the line. Sure violence is hardly (if ever) a solution to anything, but a little training in obedience never hurt anybody so long as the kids in question are able to learn from it. Also teaching kids to respect their peers and elders is important, otherwise they'll grow up to be the Beebs.

It is, in some cases at least (extreme persistence/extreme stupidity....)

Aye aye, there is several types of children, and in my mind some would deserve exile (and I know the worst place in all the world, there is even real life Radroaches) actually my uncle was tired of my cousin's behavior and went there with her, fuck rarely laughed so hard.
But personally I think scaring the animal/kid one time is enough to bring the laws with a strong voice, if my dogs are barking shouting "Shut the fuck up" is enough.

Not enough I think *cough* *cough*.

I really don't think so, it depends of the way it is done.

I think it's wrong no matter what. With physical punishment, there's no understanding involved, the only lesson learned is "Do what I say or you will be hit". It puts a physical leash on the child and removes their free will. It removes their free will because they obey in fear of getting hit, which is fear for their safety and comfort, two basic necessities for healthy growth. Discipline is absolutely necessary, but you would have either grown extraordinarily lazy or stupid to resort to corporal punishment. It is literally terrorism in place of proper parenting. Severity doesn't matter, physical punishment has a unique effect.
If I sound exaggerated, remember that these fears can be on the subconscious level too. If there wasn't any, then corporal punishment would obviously not be motivation to behave at all.

Let's just agree to disagree on the subject before anyone takes it out of hand.

Out of hand? Oooh, I loooove when people are somehow offended by a conversation that includes disputes of any kind.
Let's just live in our own safe space and never talk about anything, right Mr Mediator?
