That's a really good point!
I admit I mostly disagree with you, but your thoughts are still interesting and relevant. And this question in particular make me doubt my certitudes.
It shouldn't because in common vocabulary, hitting a child means a slap in the face on or the bum whereas hitting a girlfriend means full-on punches.

*long sigh* Stop rationalising assault.

Smacking a child is how they learn, which is through classical conditioning. You don't HIT children to cause them unnecessary pain because that would be child abuse.

The ONLY time it is okay to hit someone is out of self-defence. The two are not mutually the same so what the fuck?

Grab a fucking kid and throw them to the fucking wall. Hard enough to cry the dry wall. That'll teach to them not to eat a cookie before din din.

@Acarr
I agree. Comparing parent hitting a child with boyfriend attacking girlfriend is insane.

I'm irrationalizing both hitting children and assault to say they are not intrinsically different, that parents are so accustomed to the method they delude themselves slightly. There was exactly one post in this conversation that wasn't for some reason angry and didn't misinterpret my posts, and had substance (evidence/dissection to validate their positions) which was Itooh's.

I have to give evidence for my position, you do too. None of you do that (at best, the evidence is "it makes them behave" and "it's different from assault because I say it is" (because the child views you as superior, yes, they submit)), you all just get angry, misread my posts and call me insane for me wanting to justify not hitting or smacking a child, severity aside. In your words: "What the fuck?" :boon:

I like how you keep saying evidence even though nobody has referenced anything.

Of course smacking children is seen as old fashioned to some people but it is nothing compared to child abuse! Though I'm never going to change your mind if you feel that physical punishment is not the right way to raise a child. None of us are parents as far as I'm aware either so I can't be arsed arguing any further.

If someone says an argument without providing evidence, that implies the statement is supposed to be the evidence, otherwise it's an unfinished argument.

To me, classic distinctions between child abuse and corporal punishment are based on the parent's intention for the parent, and severity of the punishment for others, because they will assume the parent's intention from the severity. Intention isn't everything though. There isn't a fine line, and I hold my position because of the reasons I brought earlier in the conversation.

That's not true! Itooh made an argument that made me consider things I didn't before, which is briefly lowering the child's self esteem to make them achieve perspective/realization. I still don't agree with it much, but has made me think.

A statement isn't evidence, that's just not how things work. :boon:

Referee here : Acarr wins this one. A statement without evidence is no argument. End of story on this one.

Speaking from personal experience, there were way more worse punishments that me and my siblings were faced with. Either having our asses smacked with the dreaded chañcla (the sandal) or put hot sauce on your tongues for example. Out Hispanic elders were ones not to be messed with. Looking back at those punishments, I can easily laugh at how silly they were.

I remember this one time, my brother got my grandma really pissed. He made her so mad, that she ran after him and threw a shoe at him. This is was the only time I seen her run. It was so hilarious.
