I wish underwater levels were as smooth as Origins. I can understand the dislike for underwater levels in other 2D platform games. Great music, but sluggish controls most of the time from the games I've played anyways.
True fax. The underwater levels in Mario and the infamous water temple in ocarina of time had great music but poor gameplay. The levels in origins certainly were boring but they resolved a lot of common water level problems

I actually made that on the first try. Not to mean that I haven't died in the level, but there were few enough deaths, and once I got the gist of it, I managed to get to the end with all keys.

TBH, I don't have a "most hated level" at the top of my head. Sure there have been a few hard / deliberately frustrating levels in the games throughout the years, but none that stood out so much, or that I felt were "broken".

Like, the Land of the Livid Dead in Origins or Dark Legacy in Redemption - they are supposed to be well above the rest in difficulty, because they are final, optional challenges.

This could probably also go into the unpopular opinions topic, but:

I dislike pretty much any of the Rayman 1 levels which you have to play multiple times because when you first play them, you lack some of the abilities to get all the cages. Conceptually of course, not gameplay wise, but still. It's one thing to promote replaying (parts of) a game by having re-plays add to game canon or lead to different outcomes, but the R1 levels I'm talking about don't do any of that; reruns are forced upon you for little more than the sake of doing reruns.

Ironically, those levels also made replaying the whole game a worse experience. Having to go through certain ones 4+ times when you only have to play others twice makes replaying levels feel like that much more of a drag. If you really like the aesthetics of those levels that might be a different story, but they're not my cup of tea :oops2:
(edit: "not my cup of tea" referring to the levels as a whole, not to the aesthetics)

Gameplay/lore wise, my least favourite level is probably the Céloche fight in R3. Felt completely irrelevant to the story (never played a role before/after the fight itself), really annoying mechanics, and didn't have any cool features (e.g. the Hoodstomper also felt somewhat "irrelevant", but at least it had the stomping mini game after, which I thought was fun).

I like the levels the first time but going back is torturous. I think I can’t be bothered to fight mr dark

Céloche I personally liked, but man, that little fish tho

I personally hated the razoff fight with the wrecking ball for its length but if there’s any way to speed it up please tell me

I don't think there are levels in R1 that have to be played more than twice, are there? You can just wait to get all the powers at the end of Blue Mountains and then replay levels for any missing cages.

With that said, the requirement to find every cage to finish the game in itself is quite unpopular.

So I take that was common in games at the time?

What - having to go back to replay levels? No, not really. In fact, most games were linear - replaying levels out of order was simply impossible.

At least on the PC, on consoles it was slightly more common.

If you know what you're doing, no. But when I first played the game, I didn't anticipate that running was going to be an ability, so I definitely played some levels more than twice :oops2: the "+" in 4+ was basically just to account for that. "Have to" was maybe a bad way of putting it.

So I’ve worked out you’ve been a PC gamer your whole life? I believe most consoles at the time were linear and stuff but had 100% rewards

Well it’s not required if you go at the very end but otherwise if you want to grind lives or do the magician challenge it can take a bit more

Indeed, and still am. Even where I've played console games, I've done so via emulators on a PC.

I think I've patented the life-grinding in Allegro Presto at one point. :oops2:

I guess you can make sure to hit him as many times as possible with the Heavy Metal Fist before he knocks it into the basement? It's still pretty long though…

The way I usually take this fight is to keep the HMF canister as long as possible. So I charge the fist (whether powered-up or not) and whenever Razoff and his ball approach the can, I whack him. Total knock off and into the hole where he takes damage, woooo! Then rinse and repeat when he recovers. This doesn't always work though since he sometimes might still go towards the can after recovering and if he's close enough I can't stop him.

If you hit him fast enough though, it doesn't matter because the Mawpaw will give you another can as soon as he knocks off the other one…
