Rayman Raving Rabbids

You know, I could possibly, maybe, see a Rabbids movie work. Something along the lines of Gremlins would be rather cool.

You sir have made my day! but I kinda doubt Ubi wants to make the rabbids even remotely violent anymore.

They don't have to do anything too violent, just have the same basic premise. Rabbids invade and wreck shit up, humans try to stop them.

Meh, game-based movies often seem to suck, even if their source material is really rich in terms of narrative (take the Silent Hill trilogy, for instance), as they are written and directed by incompetent filmmakers looking to make a quick buck without putting any real passion behind the movie, except for in the special effects department.

It's a real shame, because I went to school and was good friends with Jodelle Ferland (in fact, she was one of my only friends through grades 3 and 4), who played Sharon. She did a stunning job too, so I'm only all the more bothered by how utterly screwy and off-target the direction was. Really, it can make one mad when a child actor's - your friend's - image is left solely in the hands of terrible filmmakers. At least the movie wasn't anything worse than extremely mediocre, it just completely failed at being Silent Hill.

I actually haven't seen the whole film (and from the scenes I've seen, I don't want to), so I can't judge Jodelle Ferland's performance as Cheryl (I refuse to call her by a name that has no purpose other than to poorly "deviate" from the original), but I'll take your word for it being good. From what I've seen, from the butchered Grey Children to "dis girl is on fiaaaa!", the movie appears to be plagued with unnecessary gore and cliched references to witch-burning and ghosts, rather than putting the focus on the classic fucked-upedness and brilliant atmospheres the Silent Hill series is known for.

Though one thing I still found stupid was Roger Ebert's comment about the film:

That was all speculation, of course, because Sony Pictures declined to preview the film for anybody, perhaps because they were concerned it would not live up to the game, or because they were afraid it would.

Really? I'm pretty inclined to say that if this wasn't based off a video game, he wouldn't be saying this. He clearly has a bias, which was proved by his "video games cannot be art" statement, but quite a bit of the review, though a relatively competent analysis of the movie itself, consisted of false assumptions about the source material and using studies about random video games (as if they were all exactly the same) as "evidence" for why the movie failed. As someone who has played the game, I can safely say that this movie looks like a pile of shit.

However, I will admit that, out of the three original games, the first Silent Hill was easily the worst choice for a movie, as its story is admittedly not as refined as that of its sequels, despite the kickass atmosphere and scares.

But, out of curiosity, what SH games have you played?

The only reason why I'm somewhat hopeful for the R&C movie is because it goes against that, it's being made by people who were very much involved in the franchise and I think are passionate and understanding of it.

Same thing here. I think it can be successful, at least I do look forward to watch it.

Have you guys heard there's gonna be a Rabbid movie? I don't know why either. A TV show I can understand but a full movie. The show is hit or miss to me but it's not something that can be done for more than half an hour. A show works better becuase they can move on to the next episode and they aren't that long so they don't drag. To be honest they are not movie material.
It's gonna be Equestria Girls all over again.

Sigh I dunno, I felt a bit indifferent about it and if people aren't happy with it then that's fair enough. But with each episode of the series getting more or less 2 million views in the US alone (which I can't imagine being a lot compared to other cartoons, though it seems to be enough) a movie was bound to happen, though eventually a Rayman movie could happen as well.

Eh, though Rayman is a good game series, I think it's just one of those that shouldn't be made into a film, as I don't think the plots (which are more suited to a game and not a film, at least to me) would translate well into a film. Games like Silent Hill, Heavy Rain, or even something like Sly Cooper, would likely be better candidates for film, as the plot is integrated into those games in such a way that they would better translate into a film, provided it was being made by competent filmmakers.

Well if you're taking the film route and you don't have a game with a strong enough plot, you can always either modify one or create your own original story. I think that if any of the Rayman games's plots were to be adapted into a film, Rayman 3 would likely be the strongest candidate, whereas I think that Rayman 2 would make a better TV series.

No problem! The last game with Rayman in Rabbids series is TV Party. Rabbids Go Home and later Rabbids games did not feature Rayman at all. Ubisoft knew it was for the best to split those franchises.

truth be told, I love the 1st rabbids, the music and costumes in 2, and the rabbid version of "open book" in tv party. it may not be what I wanted, but I cannot deny that (the original RRR) was still a great party game!

Rabbids Go Home is probably the most intriguing post-Rayman Rabbids game for me, I've always wondered how it actually is to play.
