Ok, it could’ve been much easier to just… hire a white actor. People watch these films because they want to see their classic fairytale, not Disney mushing their childhood into unappealing slop because it’ll look good with the public

Or it could have been more fulfilling to create a entirely different story yet here we are.

I don't condone marketing exercises, I just judge their results. And in the end the result would have been just as awful if Snow White was actually white, so why any of you make it the downfall of this movie is beyond me.

It's like saying Origins would have been the perfect game if Betilla wasn't overtly sexualised, when in actuality it would change so little in the actual quality of the game.

No it's not, and it's completely inconsequential for the movie itself, but it clearly shows that the producers took issue with the fact that the character was named after her pale white skin, as it if were a shameful attribute. It is a conscious decision stemming from the obsession over race that, among other things, characterizes wokism, an obsession also found, in its opposite form at the other end of the socio-political spectrum, among "traditional" racists and other similar idiots.
Pirez wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 8:49 pm Also, there's a reason the communist party started dying the moment Georges Marchais started to sprout these ideas. For a political movement whose electoral base survived a rightful demonization in 74 and the Soljenitsyn bombshell, they suddenly vanished once they were told that their algerian collegue who busted his ass just as hard was a freeloader or that the gays were all morally bankrupt because... reasons. So not only do I agree, but focusing on that supposed wokism instead of real issues is what cost him the most (inb4 "he was cancel-cultured in the 80s" when in actuality free speech is not consequence-free speech)
I thought that, while Marchais held a firm stance against mass immigration, his positions were just as firm when it came to equality between immigrant workers and local ones. Are you referring to some quote I'm not aware of?

Indeed, the problem is I wasn't familiar with Lynch's work at all. It was just on telly as a Friday-night movie, and my mother and I thought the blurb sounded interesting so we watched it. We were not expecting what we got!

Not to say I disliked it, but my life's been complicated enough lately without having that to chew over now as well! :fou:

Again, no it's not. You seem to assume that the executives at Disney are operating on the belief that non-white should be more celebrated when in actually they only see potential markets. Remakes : kids, latina : latinos. And while we know representation matters to some extend, it also doesn't matter if the quality of the product is trash, which is why Snow White is about to fail and The Little Mermaid underperformed (even though in the grand scheme of things the remake of the Little Mermaid was globally inoffensive.) It's the same people that will happily celebrate Pride Month everywhere except in the Middle East because their inclusion isn't a core belief, it's exploitation of market demographics. They don't actually care about whites, blacks, arabs, latinas, gays or neptunians. They care about what optics attracts customers.

I'm referring to most stuff described in this portrait, admittedly done by hardcore leftists but still interesting nonetheless

If we're looking at the big picture and not individuals, I think profit and values as motivators are practically inseparable. The people who care about one or the other feed off each other.

Optics is the main driving force behind marketing, but that is also centered around people and the prevailing view (at least, the prevailing view that announces itself clearly). There are executives who, quite reasonably, want to ensure their product is making people happy and not upsetting them. But in today's world derived of spiritual unification, the masses become oriented by political ideologies which they defend with a positively religious fervour. On one side are the self-appointed defenders of good, one the other are corpos who drive their machine through every garden, and they will drive one the other apart until they become the thing they despise.

Of course it's all business in the end, but I believe they do care that people with extreme views might be offended by the story of the original tale and made that decision in order to avoid potential controversies. As for representation, I have no idea to which extent changing a character's ethnicity might have a real impact on global sales, but I would have thought it doesn't matter too much in the end in an already mixed population like that of the US?

Well that seems to confirm my idea of him, he was old school commie and certainly not aligned with the hippies of May 68 but I don't see any statements against immigrant workers already in the country.
