I usually prefer written reviews, optionally backed up by some vids showing off how the game looks. I don't really like full video reviews. People increasingly use videos for reviews, tutorials, doing opinion pieces etc. and that's a shame... I personally really don't want to watch 10 minutes of film instead of scanning through an article in 1 minute... when a website offers me an "article" that's just a vid with no text, I'm out. However, there are cases where a video is a lot easier to follow, such as when you're following navigation instructions in a tutorial.

I mostly end up finding article reviews when I specificlly search for video reviews.

Stupid limbless piece of shit decides to answer with his fists rather than talking about peace! I wanted to play as a dirty naked hippie who would fight by talking and holding peace signs. And then Mr. Dark would be defeated in the most boring way ever!

@OCC I never did a video reviews, and I prefer to do a written one. It might take a while though, since I just arrived home and didn't eat yet.

If written reviews are what you prefer, then I will be looking forward to read it when it's done :D

Yes, it was a typo, sorry about that.

Now concerning Rayman DSi...

First of all, it is the latest Rayman 1 port released back to the Nintendo DSi consoles, but they are also purchasable in Nintendo 3DS consoles (800 points in DSi, and 7,99€ in 3DS). I purchased and played this in a 3DS console since I haven't a DSI, but I believe that the game suffered upscaling and anti-aliasing since the Nintendo 3DS does the same thing when playing Nintendo DS games.

Graphically, it isn't quite different from the classical versions (except for Rayman Advance) although I spotted strange differences, like a darker background in the beginning of Band Land, the pencil eraser being red instead of pink, music staffs in black instead of metalic blue... Well... differences that you couldn't see in all the other normal original releases. Even the intro and the ending cutscenes, are practically equal to Rayman Advance with scrolling text and some animated images.

In terms of gameplay, they made the game way easier than any other version I've played before. There were moments I noticed there were extra checkpoints of the Photographer placed in the game, like in Picture City and Caves of Skops, but I have the feeling that the Blue Mountains also had. The handicaps don't end in here: you start the game with 30 Continues instead of 10, you have 6 health points instead of 3, and if you catch a "P" powerup, you'll get with 10 health points instead of 5. When you meet Betilla, she'll fully restore your health. When you fight Space Mama, there's an extra "P" waiting for you and the same thing happens when you fight Mr. Dark. Even the touch screen works like a level part map, showing the location of Rayman, the Photographer and the Exit Sign (you can scroll through the map too). There were some minor event changes in levels, and by events I mean the existance of an extra cloud, extra platformers, or other objects to help you. In fact, this reminds me off the programing of sliding paths and their effect on Rayman, that works terribly in this version. So terribly that in Allegro Presto there's a point you almost can't pass a large gap, and in Pencil Penthatlon, even by walking in the inky path (which is how you actually pass through the pencil traps), you get caught by the pencils anyway and end up killed. I had to do a risker trick to manage to pass it. And the team responsible for the port knew this, so they added a Gendoor in an area where the slidding was crucial in Picture City to access a cage. There's also other programming oddness, which happens when you jump and throw a fist right after to a plum: it won't move at all. The programers tried to disguise this problem too by adding an extra event to Moskito's Nest, where you can see an extra plum that will help you to get the necessary cage. These put in side, the controls and their precision don't change from the other versions. Returning to the gameplay to just give my last notes, I believe the game was also made easier since the structure is taken from the PC version where the cages are more difficult to find. And although it got easier, it is also easier to die since the damage collisions are detected faster. So much faster that it is impossible to get out from a damaging area by yourself to safe ground. While it seems that if you die in a normal boss battle, their energy won't refill, if you die in Mr. Dark's battle, you'll have to start from the very beginning of the battle, and not in the transformations part.

And since the game was based in the PC version, the sounds are from the PC version too... at least the majority. You can listen Rayman saying "I'm waiting!" or "Hey, you!", the Magician saying "Ten Tings, please!", and that bubble-alike Ting jingle. Oddly enough, there's a minor number of sound effects that do sound different from any other version, and stranger. Some sound effects were swapped/changed by others too, like the ducking that corresponds to the fist throwing sound effect. The music sounds just like the original releases, but what I don't get it, is how it is possible that some tracks were swapped/replaced by others. You are playing the Magician's bonus stages with the Picture City music, or playing an area from Band Land with Mr.Sax's music.

In terms of exclusivities, when you reach a checkpoint, you see the word "SMILE!" and the console's front camera takes you a photo that gets framed along with two Electoons. It ends up a little annoying when you are playing in levels with lots of checkpoints. You also have a list of achievements under the name of "Anti-Dark Matters". Don't get excited since they aren't difficult at all if you can beat the game without losing a continue:

- All Cages
- Complete Forest
- Complete Land
- Complete Mountains
- Complete City
- Complete Caves
- Complete Chateau
- Complete Game
- Perfect Forest
- Perfect Land
- Perfect Mountains
- Perfect City
- Perfect Chateau
- Perfect Game

By "Perfect" they mean losing no continues.

And concerning other details, it is impossible to change the volume level of sound effects and musics so you'll want to play the game with 50% of console volume.

Now, if the game is worth the purchase, the shot, or the price... it depends of the kind of player you are. If you have terrible difficulties with the original Rayman games and you really want to play an "easier" version, then go ahead and purchase the game since I really don't think they could have made it easier than this (only if they fixed the original sliding effects on Rayman). Now if you are more worried about the game quality, it is more wiser to go to PlayStation Network (in case you own a PSP/PS3/PSVita) and buy the original PS1 title, the best R1 available, for just 4,99€ and enjoy its original design. As an alternative, You can also purchase the PC version (Rayman For Ever) in GOG.com for 5,99€ and it is also a quite enjoyable version, especially for the challenge of finding cages. Or if you own an original console or you are a collector, you can look for great bargains on eBay and still save money. I personally think that 7,99€ is too pricey for the game (and port) it is, and comparing with the available alternatives that are much better an economic. Nintendo/Ubisoft never changed that price though, for some reason. If I could rank it, it would be among the worst R1 versions that I've ever played. Now if worse than Rayman Advance or not, I really can't say. At least the game was well adapted to the GBA system despite of the weaker graphism and music, while the DSi game looks better but there were gameplay details I didn't like at all. So I think DSi really goes below Rayman Advance for me. I give a final rate of 3,5 stars out of 5.

Great review! Though 3.5/5 stars seems like a lot when you say the game is "among the worst R1 versions that I've ever played" with strange graphical glitches, bugged music and sound, game-breaking glitches ("even by walking in the inky path (...) you get caught by the pencils anyway and end up killed"), completely nerfed difficulty, a ridiculous and annoying photo shoot gimmick and a price that's much higher than other - better - versions. You're giving it a 7 out of 10 now... from what I read it doesn't really deserve that... or does it?

Although the port has got some oddities, the game is perfectly playable and completable, I have my save file at 100%: puu.sh/35a0a.JPG

They also tried to detour the slippery paths' lack of efficacy which is better than doing nothing about that. So I think I gave a fair score to the game.

Wait.. whaat?? I purchased a 1500NPC through my father's creditcard and bought it for 800 points for my 3DS. how could you spend 7,99€?! Maybe nintendo changed the way to puchase items from the eShop over the year :/ and I missed it :(

No need to say sorry
Anyways Haruka-Chan, this was a very good review. I would still like to try out the game but I cannot go on eShop channel because then my 3DS will update and I want to be able to install homebrew one day on it because I travel alot and almost 90% of times I am importing games for my other consoles. I am in very bad situation with my 3DS. Hopefully when I mod my 3DS I can buy Rayman DSi. Can you do review in future on Rayman DS or Rayman 3D?
