Right, right, so like [hoodluhms], the original pronunciation in English.

I wonder if this is something the devs did on purpose, or if it's something they messed up on themselves...

They did make the "Looming Sea" pun... so that's strange.

I guess that says it all then. Still, no big deal really. I don't care how you're supposed to pronounce it anyway, because I'll always pronounce it the way I do.

Perhaps Origins' pronunciation is a mere retcon, and we're supposed to take the new pronunciation as the accepted one.
Either way, I'll pronounce it as I always have, sorry Michel!

Nono, I think they've always pronounced it [looms] because that's more related to the French (and English I guess) illumination and its pronunciation.

However, the voice actors for the different games always keep pronouncing it differently, so that doesn't really help in settling this. You know what? Let's decide this: both are right for several reasons and you can choose which one to use with personal preference.

That'd probably be best.
So, back to finding the goodies that Rayman 3 had.

I'm pretty sure they did it on purpose - I actually got the pun immediately when the game came out back when I was eight.

But that's really the discussion that was going on here; whether it really can be considered a pun, since the original pronunciation is completely different.

I don't feel like nitpicking over this anymore. Let's move on.

Wait, I'm confused, so I'll put it in point form to try to find an answer in vain:

- 'Hoodlum' [Hood-Luhm] is an English word meaning hooligan/gangster/criminal offender.
- Every English voice cast (and some other languages) of every Rayman game where lums are mentioned has had it pronounced as 'luhms.'
- Rayman Origins is the first game where there was any sign of the 'loom' pronunciation. A logical retcon.

With that in mind, I'm as sure as I'm sure there are green snakes in Jamaica that, even if it wasn't initially intentional (but probably was), at least one, if not many of the developers pointed out the pun and the guy who created the hoodlums went along with it.

No, because the "Looming Sea" is in R3.

Where did the "Looming Sea" name come from guys?? No one answered that yet.

I always took the Hoodlum word in two senses: people that create trouble/havoc and Lums with hoods/hats.

@Robotic Teensie The Looming Sea was about to be a level from an aquatic world in R3 but it was cancelled for several reasons.

Really? I thought different versions of R2 had different pronunciations. Maybe the French say [loom]? And maybe Ancel or someone else in the team pushed for that name to be used in English too, to avoid confusion, and so it became canon?

The "loom" pronounciation was already said by the French in Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. I believe all the other languages used the English way of "lahm".

I highly doubt that this correlates, it seems like far too much of a stretch based off a very loose assumption, especially when considering the fact that all the characters pronounced it as 'luhms' throughout the entire game.

Hmm, I disagree. The voice actors might not have been aware of the other pronunciation, but that doesn't mean a game designer can't have made up that pun. The game was made by a large team of people... apparently only some of them used 'looms'.

The seas are looming, all right – looming with waves of weird watercraft that only the Hoodlums were insane enough to launch.

This sentence sounds unnatural and contrived. Why would they use looming? I'm certain it was an intentional joke ("Sea of Looms"...). But because the Looming Sea was scrapped and the voice actors said 'luhms', we just never heard 'looms' being used.

By the way, I just found another cool function of Cheat Engine:

A wireframe mode!
Now I can see hidden areas :D
(bonus question: guess what area belongs to the above image)

Really weird glitch while playing Missile Command: get into wireframe mode -> switch to desktop -> back into R3 - then this happens:

Image

The introduction screen of Missile Command is still visible, but the missile can be launched and navigated!
But... the missile does not have infinite fuel, just a normal load... after it has run out, it starts reversing. Odd.

I think I remember activating a weird glitch in Missile Command where the SR travels in reverse direction and messes up the camera... :?
