3 of the 5 characters have been in it since the first game, and don't offer anything extraordinarily new if you've played a Smash Bros game before. They're improved, definitely, but it's not like you're going into something unfamiliar or brand new with them. Mario, Link, and Pikachu feel largely the exact same as past games, but are better due to the better engine. And the less interested you are in serious, high level play, the less noticeable these improvements are (hence some people are still complaining about Mario's FLUDD being back, even though it's been made a lot better, they just aren't into the game enough to actually experiment and compare).
The only playable stage in the demo is Battlefield, yet another component of the series that has been in every entry to date (it wasn't selectable for VS Mode in Smash 64, but you fought the Fighting Polygon Team on it in 1P Mode. Plus, Dreamland was basically Battlefield in that game, save for the odd gust of wind). You can select it's Final Destination form, but that also just means you are playing Final Destination as it was in past games (the particular structure and shape of Battlefield's FD form is meant to be identical to regular FD).
You cannot toggle the rules at all (can't even make it a Stock Match, which the vast majority of people prefer to a Time Match). And playing on Battlefield automatically forces you to use items and vice versa for the FD variant (a lot of people actually prefer Battlefield to FD when it comes to serious play so a lot of poeple were disappointed by not being able to do this in the demo).
Mega Man and Villager, as much as I love them, were probably two of the worst choices for demo newcomers, because they are not extremely accessible. They feature two of the most complex playstyles in Smash Bros history, second only to Rosalina & Luma. Having one of them is fine and makes sense, but Wii Fit Trainer or Greninja should have been playable, to give people more accessible newcomers to try out. Mega Man and Villager give the impression that the newcomers are especially complicated, even though the majority of them in the full game are pretty accessible.
5 characters is not especially generous in context. It's a mere tenth of the roster, but more importantly, Smash is a 4 player game at max. They needed to give a fifth character so the Random option could still have an actual random element to it, and so a group of 4 demo players could alternate between characters and not have the same 4 characters in every match. 5 characters is the bare minimum they could give you.
And while the Japanese demo allowed players to transfer their Gold from the demo into the full game, this feature has been removed from the Western demo (shame too, I already have over 20,000G from the demo).
This demo is definitely bare bones. Not that I'm complaining as I love it regardless, but as I said, most people won't lose sleep over not being able to boot this up more than 30 times.

I literally gained nothing personally from that code other than being called an asshole on this topic. Try harder next time you try to hurl out your biased grudge against me and make asinine accusations of me being a sociopath, jfc.
And there is no "maybe" in whether or not someone would have took it over the time between it was posted and Brad got his 3DS. People were selling the things on eBay. People were offering nudes for the things (genuinely). Someone would have taken it.
And as I said before, I didn't think Dandy's code was real at first because he was teasing Brad about whether or not it was real. At the time, he sounded like he had more, so I figured "if it isn't real, it isn't real. If it is real, then we know Dandy isn't bullshitting and I can inform people that Brad still needs a code, meaning two people work out to get one".
Also, there is the fact that I was the first to act on Rayfist offering one of his codes. I didn't get an answer on that, so after using Dandy's code, I said it could go to Brad anyway. Which it is now.
All's well that ends well.
