< wonders why 'Merde' means 'Shit' and 'Bordel' means 'whorehouse' in french, but 'Bordel de merde' means 'Goddamnit'.
It's a combination of two words, so logically we should get 'Whorehouse of shit'. :?

< speculates that ‘goddamn it’ in English and ‘bordel de merde’ in French are rough equivalents only in the sense that both are impolite interjections

< reminds other literal translations like "pomme de terre". The real translation is "potato", but it literally means "Apple of the soil".

Aardappel~! Pomme de terre might as well have been terrepomme, but French doesn't work like that. (Potato could've been earthapple too.)

< loves language in general.

As someone who's tasted lots of raw potatoes, < can confirm that they do seem rather similar in flavour to apples. The ancients no doubt got a bit confused. :mryellow:

< asked <'s French teacher about this, he said that 'Bordel de merde' and 'Goddamnit' are almost equal in strength.
But 'Bordel de Merde' can also be used to talk about how worthless a place is.
An example would be Raymanzone, quel bordel de merde.
