It's a set with certain operators that meet certain properties but it's been so long since I studied this I'll definitely get some of them wrong.

I started out on a response last night, but then came to the same conclusion as Humch, despite the fact that I was able to rattle them off, not one year ago. Now that my bed isn't calling me I'll have another stab at it…

A set, V, defined over a field, K, of scalars, is a vector space if it is endowed with the operations of vector addition and scalar multiplication such that, for A, B, C in V and a, b, 1 in K, we have:

1. A + B = B + A
2. (A + B) + C = A + (B + C)
3. There exists a zero vector 0 in V such that A + 0 = A
4. A vector A has an additive inverse –A so that A – A = 0
5. 1A = A
6. a(A + B) = aA + aB
7. (a + b)A = aA + bA
8. (ab)A = a(bA)

So, did I pass?

On top of that, I would also add that the vector addition and the scalar multiplication are invariant in V: for all A, B in V and a in K, then A + B is in V, as well as aA.

Ah yes, the closures. I guess I just couldn't be bothered mentioning them.
