If this was a guess, it is a good one!

Indeed, according to the game storyline, the aliens have been turning sentient species into drugs, and humans have been the last species to be subjected to it, following the invasion of Earth.

Shatterhand is correct! The Japanese version, known as Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain was developed around the same time, and there are minor differences between the two.

I'm going to put aside the question begging to be asked... how come it took you 3 guesses to think of this game, when the α and β symbols are a straight giveaway...

I first encountered Solbrain in a broken bootleg I played on my friends counterfeit NES clone in the nineties. I recall that only two stages worked, but I feel in love in the mechanics and the music. Years later I found a NES ROM, and actually played it through on an emulator!
