I'm pretty sure .gifs (I assume you mean animated ones) are A-OK, as long as they fit the regular guides of not being too intrusive, large or obnoxious.

Wait, what am I talking about, I know they're OK - my current sig was one I entered for a SOTM contest. x)

.GIFs are fine, it just needs to be a recognisable sig (Shroob's current sig being a shining example).
