Who said it was to fix grammar? A spell checker is to avoid orthographical mistakes.

Maybe not a spell checker, but I’m sure there’s software that can analyse sentence structure.

Well, Word also checks conjugation.

Depend on how higher education is run I guess, for me it was so much of a disorganised shambles I was told I wasn't even the only one to drop out.
