No, it doesn't. Those are originally the symbols for the planets Mars and Venus, named after two Roman deities. The Mars symbol represents Mars' shield and spear, while the Venus symbol represents Venus' hand mirror.

They represent male and female, yeah. They're derived from the astronomical symbols.
