Will I ever smoke? No.

'Cause I hate the smell. Sometimes I can't even stay in the same room with a smoker.

I don't really, though I'll usually nab a cigarette off of somebody if they're going at it (really, like once every few weeks). I freaking love the head rush, it's like floating in a blanket of stars :?: , and I also understand that it's something you become immune to if you do it too much.

Weed? Hell yeah, though still only one or two days a week. Tobacco-infused joints are a new love of mine, since they give you the cigarette headrush immediately without even really being bad for you - credits here go to this Swiss guy I met.

The smell of both kinds of smoke is nostalgic for me, so I'm generally pretty fond of it.

Dunhills, it destroys my head upon waking up.

Or I can go with marloes or luckies. I sometime smoke both of them at the same time.

Funny how Ad should mention smoke being nostalgic. The other night I was with a crowd moving between pubs and one or two decided to light up a cigarette. I inhaled the smoke, possibly for the first time in 2017, and realized just how much I missed the smell of the stuff! Still no plans to take up the habit myself though.

I used to smoke a little bit to curb stress, but now I no longer do. I never got addicted to it, and it was nice to pass the time and tasted good. Not really much to say otherwise.

Wow, I was so ignorant back then.

I still don't smoke generally, but in social situations I'll gladly take one (if it's free!). Can't say it gives me a huge amount of pleasure but I can understand those who do smoke for that reason. We're all humans and we all get high off something, so why not?

I fail to comprehend why some folks smoke just to "relieve stress" and to experience "pleasure." There are more healthy ways to take away stress, and that pleasure is only temporary. The many chemicals that are put into your body are harmful and will affect you in the long-term.

I would take stress over 4,000 different chemicals affecting my lungs anytime.

At this point, I think the effects of smoking are well known and folks are well aware of the risks. Ultimately, though, it's their lifestyle choice, and while I may not agree with it, I respect it.

What I'm not so fond of is having to deal with second-hand smoke because folk like to congregate near building entrances, despite there being clear no smoking markers. I don't tend to have the most pleasant reactions when inhaling smoke, and it doesn't help having to hold my breath every time I'm entering a building.

I understand that. It's their life, and it's their decision to do whatever they please, which is why I started with: "I fail to comprehend why some folks smoke just to "relieve stress" and to experience "pleasure." There are better alternatives.

I did go off the mark with the chemicals statement though.

What about wanting to utilise an incredibly fast and convenient tool for relieving stress and experiencing pleasure to the detriment of your health is difficult to comprehend? Every one of us does this to some extent, whether it's eating junk food, indulging in mindless entertainment, not exercising regularly, or smoking. Failing to comprehend why people would choose to smoke is hypocritical.

Can you name some of these alternative methods of stress relief you can whip out during a five-minute work break that are as universally effective?

In my case, it tends to be the smartphone, it's probably not quite as effective in giving the feeling of contentment, mind. It is a fair point, and I guess that's probably the reason why e-cigs and vaping is such a big thing these days.

That's a fearmonger's talking point, weeds not any worse than alcohol and can do a lot of positives for some people - taking a little weed in the morning is a pretty common practice to boost your performance and focus.

I'm assuming Ray was referring to cigarette smoke, as opposed to tobacco or weed smoke. I don't really see much in the way of cigarette smokers here, usually it's either vaping or rolled tobacco.

Clearly you didn't read my first statement well enough. I understand people would smoke just cause they like to for a peaceful pastime, but not to relieve stress or experience temporary pleasure.

Listening to soothing music, having a good laugh and taking deep breaths are quick ways to relieve stress. There's more, but since you're limiting to this one scenario, the others wouldn't be as highly effective. But that's three different ways, and they work anytime.

I never smoked or touched a cigarette and will never touch one, I don't like the smell, the mere concept just has too many bad consequences like tarnishing people's lives and cause unhealthy addictions.
