A comet is, if I remember rightly, an object made entirely out of ice that hurdles through space either 'as a rogue' or in orbit around a star or other heavenly body. (like mine - OH NO HE DIDN'T)
It has a tail caused by the astral winds of a star and is not, as is common (Hollywood) misconception, caused because it's travelling so fast.

Comet nuclei are known to range from about 100 meters to more than 40 kilometres across. They are composed of rock, dust, water ice, and frozen gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia.
