There was a slight modification to the aesthetic to the slim PS2 near its end of life, if I remember, in the original slim, the overall finish was matte, with a small gloss strip that had the PS2 logo engraved. The later one had the entire disc cover being glossy.Other way round, as seen below.
EDIT: Yup, there was a slight change in design, here's the original slim:
And here's the final slim, with stand:

To be honest, I prefer the first PS2 slim model's design over the latest one. I also noticed they all have different weights. Mine, the SCPH-77004, is much lighter in comparison to my friend's SCPH-70000. Also the latest model can't be softmodded and can't be hardmodded with any modchips you want, which is a huge "downfactor" for me.

I owned the original slim as a kid, it gave out a few years ago, sadly.

I grew up with an old fat PS2, my father bought it me pretty much after my old SNES died in 2002/2003. It lasted for me until 2005 and then it died. Maybe a year later, my father bought me a new one, a modded silver slim, as I promised to take care of it this time, and it died a good year after, (no one told me water and computer chips don't like each other ^^). Shortly he bought me another one (a black slim), as I now really promised not to break it again and this time it lasted with me until 2012. It didn't broke, it was in top notch condition, I just sold it, as I thought I didn't need it anymore. I bought myself a modded PS2 fat last year and some month after I bought another modded slim, which I still use. I didn't see any reason to really keep the fat one, because it had troubles reading discs so I gifted it my friend OCG for his birthday.
EDIT:
Wait don't get me wrong here. Before I sent it to OCG, it still could read all my discs (but barely)!

Unless you are counting the games that still have compactibility problems in the emulators then alright, but for the games I've played I had none so far at least.
Which is most PS1 games. Rayman 1, for instance, has a load of issues running in an emulator, actually, including the CDDA TOC not being read properly (caused by mooby2; note the lack of fade-outs, music playing in the wrong places, not looping, and the static in Caves of Skops), graphical glitches, incorrect timing, and other fun things, with incorrect audio/video output that is a constant despite whatever game you throw at it (and is even present in more accurate emulators). It's fine of these kinds of issues don't bother you, but, really, you can't say the emulators are "just as good" when they're host to these sorts of problems.
emshomar wrote:That's because you are using a specific fat model PS2, which still has all PS1 components built in, OCG Slim PS2 and some later Fat PS2 models have some components emulated I guess, which leads to some compatibility issues. My PS2 Slim can output PS1 games via component at 240p, while a real PS1 doesn't even support component video, so I think it is safe to say mine uses partly emulation. Although, I never had any troubles with any of my PS1 games I tried on it.
Actually, the fat model PS2s have all the same PS1 components that the Slim PS2s have: the CPU. That's it. Meaning that all PS2s use partly emulation, including emulation of the sound chip and 2D graphics processor (3D graphics processing is performed by the CPU, much like shitty "Intel HD Graphics"). The reason later models of the PS2 Slim have compatibility issues is because, if I remember correctly, many of the chips (not the I/O [PS1] chip, funnily enough) were significantly modified to become smaller and more power efficient, and, thus, compatibility issues arose with both PS1 and PS2 games.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, if I remember correctly, has issues with every single PS2 for some unknown reason.

All these issues happen to me, too, and I'm playing it from an original CD.

That has absolutely no effect, actually. ROMs available online are ripped from an "original CD", so there's no difference between the two whatsoever to an emulator (unless, of course, the ROMs are corrupt).

Fair enough, but still it is a great alternative for gameplay if people don't own a PS1/PS2.

No? Croc 1 runs at 100% in my PS2, and so does in every PlayStation 2 console as far as I am aware. Croc 2 was the game that did give me problems in the sound effects, and I've asked this to other user owning the same game and an earlier console (Silver fat PS2) and he had the same thing.

Croc 1 Japanese has issues on Slim PS2's. Music would stop and horrible noise would start. Pausing the game and unpausing fixes it. Croc 1 PAL has no issues on any PS2, Japanese version is fine on Fat PS2.

Oh lol I know basically nothing about Croc, so I assumed Legend of the Gobbos was the game you were referring to, since it (well, I guess the NTSC versions anyway) are known to have issues with PS2s.
But, anyway, on topic, I'm going to try wiring up one of my old, crappy keyboards to control R1 on the PS1, which will hopefully increase my speedrunning skillage (since I find that the game controls better on a keyboard).

Hmm... I might try that game out on my PS2 Slim and see the results myself.
EDIT: Works fine for me. Other than very little minor lag during cutscenes (I suppose that's because the Disc wasn't burned properly), I did not notice anything wrong.
Another EDIT: Well I figured that it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't .

A copied one contains all the same data as the original. I don't think it will make any difference when using an original copy.

Do you have exact same PS2 model as Haruka?

I don't know. All I know is, Haruka also got a late PS2 Slim, probably from the 9er series. Mine is a SCPH-77004.

I tried Croc 2 on my 90004 when I used to own it and it had same issue Haruka said. SCPH-77004 might not have such issues.
Numbers are really important when it comes to PS2. SCPH-75001 for example has issues playing even some of PS2 games.

That is not a valid answer. It still can be any model from the 9er series, or maybe they just had some old 7er on stock which they just reduced the price for, which was the case for me when my father got the SCHP-70001 while the 9er series started to be sold.
