It happened several years ago in France. Now you can't buy alcohol in stores, and people start asking for your ID from time to time, although it's not as frequent as in the US (do I really look like I'm less then 21? I should grow a beard and keep it, I'm getting more and more bored of having to show my passport every single time).

That is what my parents did, basically. My brothers and I tried drinking alcohol progressively, the first time around 13/14, then proposing it occasionnally (or for big events like new year's eve) until we started asking for some or got used to drinking usual alcohol (which in France is wine, and you know it's hard to get used to red wine...).

Red wine was the first alcoholic beverage I took a liking to, actually. Drinking it feels so classy.

Of course it does, but the taste is actually quite strong when compared to white wine, and it easily reminds teenagers of vinegar. Red wine is very sour and hard to appreciate at the beginning, that's why it's better to start with white wine usually.

Personnally, i liked cider first, but it is probably one of the easiest alcoholic beverages to start with, as the sweet ones don't contain a lot of it. But I prefer hard cider, it's great :D.

I'm still impressed you liked red wine first.

That's assuming all parents are responsible enough to introduce alcohol in this way. In reality, do you think removing the age gate and allowing children to buy drinks is the best way to combat alcoholism among young people?

Perhaps not. Places where it's always been culture to educate children normally with alcohol (Italy for example) might be able to deal with that sort of thing better than other countries that suddenly change their legislation to allow it.

If it were ingrained into our culture enough, yes. Of course, there'll always be those terribly irresponsible parents who don't show their kids anything, but weighing it out, I think the positives outweigh the negatives in general.

It's quite common among our scientists actually! I went with a group of four to the Chemistry Olympiad in Vietnam back in July. Of the four of us, three were non-drinkers and we were just about the only team not to get drunk at the Farewell Banquet!
