Out of all the arguments defending Rayman 1, this is probably the worst I've ever seen. Rayman 1's story was straightforward and generic, but fairly standard for games of that era. Rayman Origins' story is quite unique, but executed like complete nonsensical shit.

Adsolution is right. But there it goes, RO's story is original but at the same time badly executed.

To elaborate: while R1 had little to no awesome events in the story, it managed to present a fantastic world. I would actually say that RO manages to copy this aspect of R1, whether this was intended or not.

Agreed 100% with Teensieking, took the words right out of my mouth

I'm compelled to agree with Ad, Sergio is right in saying that there are events happening in the game, the problem is that it isn't presented as clearly and is overshadowed by the sheer insanity of the game.
The BETA script showed ideas that I think should have been included, the Ales Mansay backstory for one is something that I really wish was in the final product.

To end this R1 vs RO debate here are some new screenshots showing a new boss (probably): http://nintendoeverything.com/119443/ra ... enshots-2/

I haven't seen any of these so far, it seems the boxing gloves and red missiles from RO are returning.

I haven't seen any of those screenshots before. It looks like the jetpack toads fired the red missiles. Rayman really spammed the fire button, lol.

As with the majority of users on this forum, I concur that Rayman 1 is a far better game than Rayman Origins. In terms of art style Rayman 1 uses a more traditional style, while providing surrealistic landscapes, that when intertwined with the amazing soundtrack, creates something truly magical. While Rayman Origins still had gorgeous environments, for the most part they lacked magic in their atmosphere. In terms of story, yes, Rayman 1's plot is quite basic and standard for all platformers at the time, if you didn't have to save the world from invaders, you had to rescue a throw-away damsel in distress. Rayman Origins on the other hand, had a far more original and unique plot than R1, but the problem at fault as Adsolution said is true, it was executed very poorly. In level design, Rayman 1 is the winner, primarily because there were multiple paths to take than just going forward to the right like in RO, and you had to backtrack to previously visited stages to uncover new secrets. In RO everything is straightforward and there's no need to revisit previous stages and explore, you just run forward from one end to the other onto the next level. I haven't seen those two screenshots before either, the Toad "boss" looks interesting, and the environment of the other shot is quite nice as well.

Hm... isn't it weird? the Blue Punch things are still hand drawn...
I must confess I'm not a big fan of the Blue Punch things... they turn a strong character into something unneccesarily stronger. They're helpful just to destroy robots, but that's it... even underwater they are a pain in the ass.

In my honesty, it is the very first time I see both pictures. I don't think they are available in the most popular websites.

What do all of you think this giant Toad "boss" is supposed to be, it it some sort of Toad/robot hybrid or, in my personal opinion, a Toad clad in knight's armor? It looks like we have a basic idea of the strategy to defeating the boss as well, it looks like he has some sort of glowing core in the center of his chest that the heroes have to hit.

Holy bloody hell - you should definitely, most urgently become a character designer. The level of detail, especially for just a quick sketch, is amazing, even though you didn't fiddle about creating tiny, unnoticable 'fractal details' because that's how 'detailing' works. You did it just right. I love it. It's got a kind of Disneyesque feel to it and yet, it completely fits your own style.

Yep, the most annoying thing about some character designers is how they completely mess their characters with all kinds of ridiculously tiny details to make them look "cool". I'm definitely seeking to make good designs that have the exact right amount of detail. Thank you so much, kind person!
