You're sure of that? This is not just stretching? Can you send some screen?
It is stretching; I made a mistake. (Though how I didn't notice is beyond me)

The Jano's-face-not-fitting-on-the-screen-entirely problem is present in all PC versions of the game as far as I know. I've had it with all my Rayman 2's on every OS I've played it on. It's just because of the larger screen size that it happens.

Still, my screensize keeps resetting to 640x480. It's a bit sad. I can't get it to go larger than that. What exactly did everyone change? I'm using the GOG version, by the way.

Try going into C:\Users\usernamehere\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\GOG.com\Rayman 2 and change the Ubi.ini file in there.

The directory doesn't exist. There's nothing inside the VirtualStore folder. I can see hidden files and folders, but there's nothing in there.

For me the ubi.ini file is in the Rayman 2 installation folder.

Maybe game is running also in Window Mode?
Then copy other binaries.
If you have different language version, ubi.ini is in C:\Windows

Have you run GXSetup.EXE? (stupid question)

As admin, especially on W8...?

Yup, to no avail. It didn't even change the ubi.ini. The other setup did, however... but the result was the same.

Yes, I'm running the game as an admin on the Win8. (or did you mean the GXSetup? I'll try that)

Oh fuck, running the setup itself as admin did the trick! :D

The lags, however, the lags are real. :c
Next quest: how to get a game as small as this to not lag out so much (the problem may be that I'm using a virtual machine, but still, it's only Rayman 2).

Running GX Setup is a bad idea, it resets your custom Ubi.ini config back to the only ones available in the GX Setup, which are 640×480, 800×600 and 1024×768. If you want something higher, simply edit and save Ubi.ini. However, you do need to run GX Setup just once initially to generate the file in the first place, so just run it and pick any non-default resolution (in order to generate the resolution parameter in Ubi.ini), then only edit Ubi.ini for the rest of time.

As for the lag, that isn't fixable, and is a Windows 8 issue. Word: Use Windows 7.

I have been able to fix the lag, but it unfortunately forces the colour display into 16-bit with no dithering.

Dithering is ugly on an LCD though, and doesn't the game only run in 16-bit? This sounds like a good thing to me!

I'll post the instructions on how to get it working in a bit. One caveat however is that this might not work on Intel graphics cards (at least on mine, it crashed when you load a save).

EDIT: I got it working on both of my graphics cards! Instructions in a few minutes (in a new topic as I will take it further than just compatibility soon).

EDIT 2: Topic created, hopefully it works for all of you!

Hm, but my GX Setup allows me to select 1920x1080 as a resolution. I'm checking out your topic, Rib.

Yeah I've played Rayman 2 on Windows 8- it's fucking awful, not worth the effort to fix. Just downgrade to 7 like I'm doing.

That's not an option for me, unfortunately.

Sorry to say none of RibShark's solutions worked. The game crashed as I booted it when using the alternate DLLs. I'm awaiting his self-pronounced more awesome solution eagerly! :mryellow:

Though it is an option, you can very easily downgrade to 7, I did it with Adsolutions help a while back.

The more awesome solution is very, very far away. Basically the game has DLLs that correspond to each graphics driver. I could reverse engineer one of them and create my own, customised one that uses something like OpenGL. This will take a long time to accomplish though. In the mean time, I would suggest using nGlide (which may run too fast and if so, change the refresh rate to 120hz) which seems to work fine for me on Win8.1.

Urgh, the lag is insufferable. Rib, what are your ubi.ini settings? Did you use the nGlide config from GOG? Did you, afterwards, run GXSetup? My Device and Driver entries in that setup are listed as "... ( )" when I choose the Glide2 (1.0.0) Voodoo Graphics Glide 2 Driver option instead of DirectX6. As an illustration, the lag is so bad it skips about 3 frames every 2 frames. x)
Curiously, Glide is also incapable of rendering the font text in that red shade that R2 uses sometimes. DX6 is fine though, but also, the lags.

Ubi.ini

Code: Select all

[Rayman2]
GLI_DllFile=GliVd1
GLI_Dll=Glide2
GLI_Driver=
GLI_Device=
GLI_Mode=1 - 1600 x 900 x 16
Language=English
ParticuleRate=High
Fraps says I am getting constant 60fps even with my lower-quality graphics card. Try opening nGlide settings and changing the refresh rate to 120hz and toggling vsync. The red text also renders fine for me, so I really do not know what is causing this.
