You probably fell directly into the alternate "GAME OVER" world loaded into the Cave of Bad Dreams level.
I once fell through the world too by glitching through a seem in a corner of two walls - I could see all the events that I would be running into later below me. The structure of where things are in R2 when a level loads is rather interesting.
I've actually become very proficient at activating this glitch - in fact, quite a few of them. I'll list six fall-through-the-world-ish glitches I can think of that I've consistently gotten to work off the top of my head.
- In the Cave of Bad Dreams, PC version, while fighting Jano, if you continue to stand on a skull as another one collides with it and they fall, there's a chance you may fall far further than the nettles below, and as soon as you do, you can hear the beach ambience.
- In The Top of the World, PC version, if you pick up a barrel from the one dispenser in the level and throw it so that you get knocked against the wall, causing another barrel to drop on top of you, it may shove you through the floor and you'll continue to fall for a while.
- In The Precipice, PC version, during the section where you're helicoptering down a long ways, navigating your way straight down (as opposed to following the path) in a zig-zag pattern while sticking close to the walls, the cliff event will not trigger, and you can continue helicoptering down, and down, and down, and down until you decide to let the helicopter go and fall for a few seconds.
- In The Sanctuary of Water and Ice, PC version, I don't remember how exactly I executed this one, but when you're standing beside the keg-dispenser, I jumped at a certain point in the water in the distance and dropped through, falling for a long time.
- In The Fairy Glade, DS version, in the corridor after the checkpoint, right before you drop down to the area where Ly is held, jumping into the corner of one of the left walls will cause you to fall directly through it.
- In The Iron Mountain, DS version, right at the beginning of the level, instead of jumping into the drainpipe, jumping as far as you can to the right of it and helicoptering into the wood wall will phase you right through it, and you'll fall for a while.
Here are also some other miscellaneous odd glitches I've gotten to work multiple times:
- In the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire, PC version, right before you enter the third area (where you drop from the lava-fall), if you jump off the plum right before the checkpoint activates, you will spawn in the next area with no plum, forcing you to continuously fall into the lava until you get a Try Again, at which point you respawn with a plum.
- In The Cave of Bad Dreams, N64 version (I think it works on any version though), if you allow two mini-janos to eat you during the exact same frame, two Raymans will spawn and be eaten. Rayfan (from DeviantART) made a GIF of this one actually.
- In Whale Bay, N64 version, at the start of the second area (underwater), if you turn around and swim back into the black tunnel a certain way, your screen may start to flicker blue, and it eventually splashed for a second, then I found myself standing. I could then walk around under water freely, but unfortunately could not complete the level, as the bridge with the blue lums sticking out from the wooden structure you navigate through to finish the level is too high to jump at. This particular glitch I've only gotten to work once where I actually walk under water, but I've many times gotten close, with the screen flickering and nearly standing one other time.
- In The Woods of Light, PC version, using the cheat to unlock all levels and have all cages, leaving the level, completing another, then returning back to the level (note that the spiral door isn't red because you haven't collected the lums) will result in a mysterious clone of Rayman appearing, walking into the wall left of where the first cage is. I believe this happens because normally after you break that cage, a cutscene starts where you walk to a certain point and Murfy begins talking to you. Since this scene never had a chance to take place as you'd used the cheat to have all the cages, it spawns the Rayman that walks at the beginning of the cutscene immediately. Since it might also not be designated where he's supposed to walk to, he'll just run into the wall. It's also worthy of note that he isn't walking in place, he starts out fairly high up the river, and walks into the wall at a slight angle which results in him moving slowly down-river until he comes to a tight corner.
All of these I've come across myself when I was a wee chav. I spent most of my video game time seeking out glitches at every opportunity. The idea of a glitch I found oh so scary, thrilling and fascinating at the same time.
